I am still relatively new at working out (1 1/2 years, but until 12/03 I was working with trainers who had me using fairly light weights circuit-style), and my new trainer is brutal <G!> The problem is leg day. I expect some soreness; I *like* it in a way since it tells me that I accomplished something. However, I don't think I should be rendered quite literally unable to walk for five days! Is it my age (43?) Am I doing too much? What is the key to minimizing soreness? And why only my legs and not my upper body? Legs are *stronger* than arms and thus should be able to handle more work. I hope to be able to raise my workout days. I'm doing an extremely basic two days a week. I'd like to go to three or four, maybe more.
Soreness is pretty common when beginning a new program, bumping up the intensity, or coming back after a layoff. It's the body's way of letting you know that you are on the right track. (As far as legs are concerned, true they are stronger and do alot of work (you would think). However, there is a big difference between walking from point A to point B (very rarely a full range of motion) and squatting or pressing a significant amount of weight.) It should subside with subsequent workouts. Make sure to warm up and stretch prior to working out. Stay with the program and before you know it you will be up to a 4 day split and complaining that you rarely ever get sore. Good Luck
