Hi. I am allergic to soy and after ages searching for 'oat groats' i finally found some, but on the label it says packed in an environemtn where soy is handled. I was just wondering, when foodstuffs have this, what exactly does it mean? What are the chances of there being soy in the product and if there is how much would be there? Plus, if i were to wash the groats would it wash off any soy contamination?
I just want to be 100% sure cuz i have to be extra careful due to my allergy. Can anyone help?
Thanks

Before taking a chance with an allergic reaction, I'd contact the vendor rather than ask where your answer will only be a guess.

ok thanks, i have tried to email the vendor and am waiting for a reply. But just generally i was wondering what the actual chances are and how small the amount of cross contamination would be if there was any. Plus, someone told me that if there was cross contamination i would not be able to wash it off - i am really curious as to why not? Surely if soy (or any other allergen for that matter) was not part of another product, then if they come into contact you can wash it off?

It probably means they use some of the same equipment in the production and packing. The contamintaion is probably a threat if you are very sensitive - I know that people with nut allergies really have to be careful about things made in the same plants as things containing nuts.
Hopefully the company will be able to confirm it for you.
Why not get regular oats?
