Tim, Glycemic index. Some foods have more naturally occuring sugers than others. We bought a book called sugar busters that helped us figure it out.

I know in a perfect world we want to limit the amount we take in, but is there one kind better than another? Is brown sugar better for you than white sugar?
Thanks..

"Sugar" is a word that has really been abused lately, and I encourage people to get away from using it or it's concept. The best thing to do is to understand the GI, and use that in regards to carbs (and any of the "-ose" words). Getting back to your question, any type of sucrose is high on the GI, no matter what its color, so limit its intake.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is GI? Something Intake?

It may not make any difference, but like anything else I that comes in white (bleached) or natural, I'd go with the natural. There is raw sugar that has a flavor similar to white. Brown sugar has a more maple flavor, which is good for somethings, but I wouldnt like it in coffee or tea. But like Rev says, if you can avoid it altogether, even better.

GI = Glycemic Index.
Based on Glucose, it is a system that rates how different types of carbs are absorbed and their effect on insulin. The higher the number, the more rapidly it's absorbed, and the faster an insulin response it creates.
