I've been doing workouts geared towards football my whole life. Then now that i don't play anymore i've been doing a pyramid program. Only the results have been so-so. I was looking into a new program and was just curious if you guys knew if it would be better to do a split-routine or a fullbody routine in order to increase strength and definition. not just get pure mass. thanks

When Starting out, you will benefit from doing a whole body routine about 3 times a week. after a few months, when your mucsles are starting to get stronger, and use to the Routine, you need to dedicate more time to each muscle group, esp the bigger ones. Even if you don't want size, and only Definition, then you will benefit from doing a Split. You might want to try a split Similiar to this.
Chest/Tri's/abs
Legs/Calves
Rest
Shoulders/Traps/Calves
Back/Bi's/Abs
Rest
Rest
Go with High Reps, and lighter weight for Definition and toning. It would also be a good idea to sign up to this Sites Routine program, and start with that. If your knew to Spliting up your Body parts, then take it easy to start, and don't do 4 exercises per body part, and 4 sets. work your way up.

ditto depending on what your wanting you can split the muscles anyways you want for a split
right now my split is
chest/ back
legs
shoulders/arms
right now i'm only doing one excercise for arms cause i think I have messed up my bicep some how, going to docter monday.

I don't do tri's and chest or bi's and back the same day since they are the secondary muscles being used.
I do
biceps/chest
back/triceps
shoulders/legs

good point ferrie thats what I do if I do a four day split as well, neither is hampered by the other being sore

A full body workout is more of an endurance training type workout, especially a circuit type, whereas if you want mass or strength or both, a split type workout is more ideal. There are literally tons of splits you can use. Some like the push/pull(antagonist muscles), some like same muscle groups like back/biceps due to fact that biceps are being used somewhat in back exercises anyway, why not go ahead and do them with back. Be careful if you choose this route not to do too much on the biceps, remember, you just did a bunch of pull type exercises and hit the biceps indirectly with 4,6,8 sets, so don't go overboard when you go to biceps. This would most probably lead to overtraining of the biceps, and you would see very little if any growth. The same if you would do chest/triceps together. Too many pushing exercises, then do tri's and you usually overdo it. I like a routine more like csferrie has, except I always do legs/calves by themselves. So, find what works for you and do it.

I just wanted to know whether its a good idea to work two body parts a day if you want to go for lean muscle mass.
Some say I should work one body part a day.
What's the best approach?
