Ok now that I have your attention, I wanted to address something I see at my gym right now. And that is the people that want that "beach body" look. I know that we have talked about this at times, but for those that do not know these are people that only work chest and arms to get that look. Also included are the ones that feel that they will acheive this in 30-60 days. What you ask is the danger? Well for one when you train just one or two body parts you can overbalance other groups and that leads to injury. The other is that you end up quitting after you do not see the results as quickly as you want to. So refrain from that mindset. Rather go in knowing that this is a longer process than 30-60 days for most it is a lifetime deal. For whatever your goals are from powerlifting to actuall bodybuilding or just getting into a healthier lifestyle, know that you have to have a "long haul" mentality and stick to it!

Ahh yes, the spring timers come out of the woodwork, (just as our New Year's resolution types do during the month(s) of Jan-Feb.) Hmmmm, this new batch of spring timers has seemingly replaced my "resolutioners" at my gym? :)

I try my best to help 'em out when approached for "tips" but most want the quick fix. *sigh*

I used to be that way myself... I learned the hard way .. those goals are not gonna happen. I have noticed an abundance of new people at my gym though, wonder if they are ppl with those type of goals .. I'll have to keep my eyes open.

Agreed. Exercise should be a constant - a way of life instead of an extra curricular activity.

I was wondering why there were so many new people at the gym lately! LOL

Well it was my intention to let those that are there just to "tone" for the summer that this is not a 3 month on 9 month off job. For most of us it is life and death. And it should be taken a little seriously. I have so many people in my gym getting ready for spring break that I have had to workout in the morning. Not that I do not think they should not be allowed there. But when us regualrs are trying to do superset, do not get in the way. ALso if i am deadlifting with my head phones on do not come up and ask me if you can work in. Those that are there all the time know these rules but since the new ones are just there for a few weeks they never learn! Oh well enough ranting.

If only those spring chickens would hire a trainer and get a real program.. I hated watching people at the gym I worked at flounder through their workouts for a week or two and then disappear off the face of the earth. I tried to give people as much help and tips and sources for info as I could, but honestly, it takes 21 repitions of something to make it a habit - so, you need to be put through a good routine with good form for at least a month to really 'get it'. not too mention that most newbies at the gym want to work out so they can justify the donut they had for breakfast and the Big Mac they will eat after their workout. It is very frustrating, but maybe it is mother natures way of cleaning up the gene poll, eh? After all - only the strong survive.

Yet another disappointment is that only 2 people that work at my gym are actually certified (one being the manager & the other the assist. manager.) The other gals that work there do not even, nor probably have EVER worked out. Not exactly motivational for newbies whom are relying on actual knowledge that will work for them.

*sigh* I'm tempted to walk around the gym with a t-shirt that says "I'm here to help!" :)

It is scary who can be hired and called 'Personal Trainer'. I know, from other message boards that you are pursueing you certification (and i also think ISSA is a good org). Good luck, and don't be too discouraged - even the people who do ask for help usually won't apply your advice more than once, unless they are serious (which most don't seem to have the attention span to be serious).
You are only their trainer one hour out of twenty-four in each day - keep that in mind, motivate, educate and inspire, but don't let it bring you down!
Good luck!

I agree, a lot of people are set in there "routines" and will only get mad at somebody trying to offer advice, even if you are a trainer. It's sad actually, but I guess that's the way things go sometimes.

Honestly the spring chickens tend to motivate me more to get certified. At least I'd have a better chance of being sought out for my time & knowledge on people whom may be a bit more serious.

The point that is disappointing is that I used to be one of those "spring chickens" & very overweight. So, I know how disappointing it is to put in hours at the gym (yet have NO idea that what you're doing isn't going to pay off.) I only wish that someone would have approached me to tell me right from wrong. :)

Anyhoo, Mutt, see what ya started? :)
