Hi! I'm a 20 year old guy and I've recently started my exercise routines. I'm just worried about that layer of fat in front of my stomach- more like a little pot belly but I have no love handles. Besides crunches, what can I do to bring it down? Thanks.

Sorry man, but there is no such thing as spot fat reduction. You can do crunches until the cows come home and not lose fat from your gut. You can only bring down your overall body fat, which is done through a clean diet and exercise.
-------------- - Its never about how much you can lift, or how many reps you do. Its just about doing it, and doing it right. - If your hungry all the time, your not eating enough. And anyways, being hungry sucks. ~Brad~ |

Hi Kumaran. Yes as borpillicus has stated a good clean diet and exercise will help reduce the belly. You will find that what a lot of others will tell you are exercise - resistence training and cardo. This will help burn the fat, thus giving a slimmer look.

YES there is such thing as spot fat reduction...its call liposuction!!;-) Seriously, coming from a guy that had stubborn fat around my mid-section for years....only a serious diet and exercise regimine will tighten that area. Good luck!-------------- SHUT UP AND GROW!!! |

CC...I didn't get that flat toned mid-section until recently when I trained for a competition in October. Before that, I struggled to keep fat away from that area. The diet for the competition is what really did it for me, but there is a big difference between a competition diet and your usual "eat healthy-low-fat" diet (I know you know this :-)). So if I were to post what my eating regimine was like during my training, it may be misleading to some members who read it. I would suggest my training diet to only those who are in training for a competition. That diet consisted of eating 5-6 meals per day, consuming most of my daily carbs in the morning, eating lean meats and green veggies throughout the day, supplementing essential fats and a high protein intake(1.5-2x's my body weight in grams). I cut out simple sugars and table salt...what a difference that made!! Eventually I carb depleted to under 50g. for those last couple of weeks. Now, since I'm not in training for a show anymore, I maintain the tone by sticking to eating low GI foods, complex carbs, lean meats and essential fat supplements. What I eat differs from day to day, but it stays at 5-6 small meals throughout the day. Counting calories and setting a calorie baseline is a must. I do cardio 3x's a week to keep the metabolism up as well. Granted, I've cheated a few times since the show, but hey, I deserve it! I hope that fulfills your request, it may seem a bit vague but everyone's body and diet is different. -------------- SHUT UP AND GROW!!! |

The only way to tap into your fat stores is with a caloric deficit. This can be accomplished through a couple means, less intake of calories, more exercise so more calories burnt than taken in, or a combination of the two.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

I weigh 120 pds. and I'm 5-4. I was super skinny....so I made myself gain weight. I satisfied w/ the weight everywhere except for my stomach. It is gross. It doesn't look real fat, but I can feel it. How can I get rid of only the stomach fat w/out losing the other weight?

Your body will choose to lose fat from where ever it wants first. What you want to do is retain your lean muscle weight while decreasing your body fat.
The only way to do that is, like BB1Fit said above, give yourself a calories deficit. Make sure to keep your protien intake up high during this "cutting" phase to prevent muscle loss. Intense training helps too (high weight, low reps). There are plenty of posts on cutting phase training and dieting, just use the Search fitBuddy at the bottom of the page. -------------- Lift. Eat. u should eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly(at least 3 days a week, including cardio). thats the solution to being lean.
if u wanna have a ripped midsection like me, then do lot of crunches, try add some weight if you can. finally you'll get there. |

i am by no means an expert here but the last few weeks i have a noticable amount of podge around my middle and tonned up my abs by doing this excersise which i wil describe as i dont tknow the name. You lie down face up and you pivot on ur bum. You bring your head and legs up towards each other at the same time so at the top position the only part of your body oin the ground is ur bum. You hover yur legs over the floor and slowly lower your legs along with lowering your upper body. In terms of a diet, i am not on one..i gained weigh because i ate takeawayas everyday in uni, i lost the weight by just eating less. I also noticed for upper arm development a good technique is to do pressups but when doing the motion, go very slowly down until ur chest touches the ground then in a controlled manner push up as hard and as fast as possible. I dont count but iu do between 15-20 reps 3 or 4 times! I would like to know if this helps or if any of the proffesional trainers in this forum agree with these techniques

i dont know if i can add anything to this, but this is my diet and exercise:
Morning: sandwich or cereals (low fat ingredients) lunch: salad with cold cuts dinner: big chunck of lean mean (chicken, beef or fish) and sided with veggies..yup u gotta get rid of that steak and mashed potato combo at night.. but what u can do, is a 'surprise' mashed 'potato' dish to go along with ur steak... its simple just use cauliflower instead of potato.. so boil cauliflower (i suggest u cut out as much of the stalk as u can) boil til soft, mash it, a splash of skimmed mild, sea salt pepper and a TINY dab of margarine... i swear it almost tastes like potato, just that its not as smooth or creamy.. so far my body gotten rid of my face fat and my leg fat, a bit of gut fat.. so if i keep going my belly will be gone... |

this is for the ladies who have had babies...i have had 3 and no matter how much weight i lose i will always have a little belly...due to the fact that the skin does not go back to perfectly flat...no amount of weight loss will tighten skin... bummer but true

The problem most likely lies with your eating plan. you could exercise all day, but if your nutrition is lacking, or your calories are too high or low you will fail to get optimal results.
You also need to be realistic about the time it will take - consider how long it took to gain weight (it didn't happen overnight) and then consider it will take a little longer to lose it. -------------- While we may not be able to control all that happens to us, we can control what happens inside us. - Ben Franklin |

Diet is much more important than any exercise you can do. It all comes down to what you're eating, not how many crunches you do. TV informercials are lying to you.

A swollen stomach may be a symptom of a medical condition. See a doctor of you're concerned. If you're losing that much weight but maintaining a large abdomen there may be other problems.
Everyone else...there may be no way to "spot reduce" fat, but...if the underlying muscles are toned the abdomen will look better. ============ Quoting from barnsleybomber: please help. i have a very large stomach and people ask me if i'm preganant. i'm not overweight and my BMI is healthy. if i diet i loose too much weight everywhere else and end up looking ill but still have the belly ============= |
