I'm 23, male, 75inches, 185pounds, with a strange body type.
Almost no fat at all is stored around the waist. Upper body is relatively small, and hips are rather large. In addition a lot of fat is stored on legs/buttocks. I am trying to bulk up the upper body to better fit the hip portion, hoping to remedy the unmanly penguin shape. All hormone levels are excellent (I visited a specialist doctor) and my health is perfect, so there is no real reason why I shouldn't be able to build muscles. I have been working out for a year and I guess I have made a little progress, but not much at all. I realise that the chance of finding someone with the same problem is pretty slim, but I would greatly appreciate any suggestions anyone might have regarding this issue.
(By the way, is it possible to get wider shoulders by working out?)
If there is someone out there who thinks he/she might be able to help me out, I can send pictures illustrating the problem.
I have thought about consulting a personal trainer, but since I am a poor student I really can't afford it :(

Thanks

LMAO thats mean cop...ezzus

You can get wider shoulders by building up your shoulders, adding muscle on to them. You would be surprised how much wider and broader you would look with alot of muscles on those shoulders.

Actually no. I have never been called anything or teased at all. In a way I wish I had been teased; at least then perhaps I would have tried to do something about it sooner. And it is not really as bad as that. I'm not quite a bowling pin :)
And no need to say sorry. I don't take offense. After all, everyone on this site are trying to improve their bodies. Some, like I, are in more need of improvement than others.

Do some arnold presses, dumbell shrugs, dumbell side laterals, for the shoulders. Don't forget to do back excersises also, you need good support from those muscles.
Hope this helps.

it's entirely possible that your diet needs work. what's a typical day for you as far as food goes?

Breakfast is usually some fruit and yoghurt with branflakes.
I try to drink alot of water.
Lunch is usually rice/pasta with chicken/fish and some sort of sauce and vegetables.
If I am in school then I most often eat out, but I try to choose food with slow carbohydrates and reasonably much protein.
The dinner is basically the same kind of food as the lunch.
I try to eat fruit every day, and I also take a liquid multivitamin mix with most of the minerals and vitamins that is needed.
If I work out then I drink protein supplement (mixed with milk) afterwards.
besides working out 2 days a week, I also do martial arts 2 days (I think it is good cardio).

Ok, here is the order of things you should probably do. First off, forget any thought of "bulking" part. When you "bulk" anything, by definition, that is adding weight. Thus, extra calories need to be consumed, and some fat comes with that. Added fat does not care where it goes, and you could be adding even more to your bad areas. So, I would advise you to go on a leaning type diet(higer protein, lower carbs, aat least one gram protein per lb. bodyweight), 5-6 meals space throughout the day,(cut the pasta totally),substitute small green salad if needed. Make your fruit of the strawberry type, not bannanas(very calorie dense). Also you may want to ditch the yogurt for a while, some people have a problem with dairy products as they tend to land around the waist. Do more reps with shorter rest periods on your resistance training(and more than 2 days is needed, and you must include all body parts, increase your cardio by 2-3 more sessions per week, and work on losing that adipose tissue, while simultaneously strengthening and building muscle in the rest of your body. This will strengthen(help build) some lean mass, which will aid in your fat burning, and go a long ways toward "evening" out your look. It will not be overnight, but this type of regimine on a consistent basis will work for you. ONe more thing, do not mix your protein drink with milk. Use water. Hope this helps some.

You are welcome dunatic, there is really much more involved, but this will get you started in the right direction I believe. As you get more into this regimine, either post or email your gains/concerns, as things will need to be tweaked to keep changes coming and your metabolism from taking a nosedive. Glad to help....

Hey dunatic. I'm kinda similar body type. I'm 6 foot 175 lbs with a small frame size. My hips r wide like yours. I worked on this by trying to get a more V-shaped body, by working on the lats, back, and chest. Machine pulldowns help the lats and upper back. Another useful exercise for me are straight arm pullovers. (in case ur wondering wut this is its on the site)
