I read a post about this pretty controversial subject about stretching before, I believe asimmer seemed to be the most involved in that forum. But something I couldnt get clear was: the discussion pretty much concluded that after the workout was the time to stretch, but what about during? Is stretching between sets or exercises bad?

roger23, I like to stretch between sets... I will do 3 or 4 sets of some excercise, then stretch for 10 to 15 seconds, and then follow with the next excercise.
After I finish my workout I also follow a quick stretching routine, I've found that if I do this, I don't get DOMS that bad. Hope this helps. -r. |

It's not a good idea to stretch before a workout. You shoul do a 5-10min warmup followed with stretching the muscles your working out. Just "don't stretch too far" otherwise it can have a negative effect on your workouts. Stretching between sets will help blood flow to muscles. And stretching after a workout will help prevent muscle soreness and cramping not to mention flexability.

OK, the last time this was discussed I did a literature search and found that there is no evidence that stretching reduces doms or prevents injury. It does improve flexibility and if you want to stretch then timing is not so important as long as you have warmed up prior to stretching.

Here are some websites on stretching. I warm up if doing weights on my glider for 4-5 minutes or some warm up exercises I have. If I am doing cardio, I do the warm up exercises first for 5-8 minutes. I like to stretch, carefully and slowly, during my workout after working out specific areas and then I end with cool down exercises and stretches. That is just what feels better for me and works for me. For example, when I first began exercising a few weeks ago, I could only bend at the waist and my hands went no further than my knees, now I can lay my hands flat on the floor comfortably. It feels better to have the flexibility and I have little soreness the following day using this methods. Of course, I am older, so flexibility gets harder as you age, I want to get the jump on that!

I as well as many top trainers and atheletes are a big fan of dynamic stretching(during a workout), while the muscle is pumped and warm. Doing this right is called fascial stretching. This is implemented in many ways, but the idea is with a solid pump, stretching the "sack" so to speak that encases the muscle. Sense would tell you if this can be achieved, it will give the muscle more room to grow. Arnold and Tom Platz for example were big fans of stretching, and arguably Arnold had the widest chest ever, and Tom Platz's legs are still legendary. Parillo is also a very big fan of this. He emphasizes it every workout. If you can stretch over time the connective tissue, think about how much more room you have for a muscle to expand in. Parillo by the way is a much sought after highly paid trainer to top sports teams and athletes, has been in the field for many, many years. I personally have incorporated fascial stretching in my workouts, also helps much with the separation between muscle groups.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

sounds pretty interesting to me. But, How does one actually stretch the "sack"? I'd like to try it.

There is something I dont understand BB1fit? Is fascial stretching just stretching as usual after doing a few sets(in between exercises) to get a pump or is it something else? Thanks for the info!!!

hehehe
============ Quoting from princesslodgey: *desperately tries to resist opportunity to make childish joke* ============= did some google-ling on it. It's basically stretching hard between sets at the times where you have the Pump going. Or it can also be like doing dumbell flyes lying on a bench and holding them for a few extra sec at the bottom to get the extra strech so it goes against the room/skin creating more room etc...
