Hey guys, well I ran out of my dextrose yesterday and the nutrition store I usually buy it from will not have more until next week or even longer. Should I just use some powdered sugar in my post workout shake until I get more or is there a better substitute?

Yeah, I did think about that. I guess I could munch a few of them as I drink my shake.

You can go to your local drugstore(Walgreens for instance) and buy a roll of dextrose tabs. They are for diabetics. About a dollar a roll. Quick fix.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Ask in there where they have their diabetic supplies. Each tablet is 4 mg. dextrose.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Also most grocery stores sell the Gatorade Mix, the main ingredient in this is Dextrose, so if you can't find anything else, put in a scoop of the Gatorade mix as a substitute. |

Yeah, I have been mixing 25grams dextrose and 25grams maltodextrin with 50grams protein for my shake.

Smarties Ingredients (Includes X-Treme Sour & Tropical): Dextrose, Citric Acid, Calcium Stearate, Artificial Flavors and Colors (Red 40 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, Yellow 6 Lake, Blue 2 Lake).
M&M ingredients: milk chocolate (sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, skim milk, milkfat, lactose, soy lecithin, salt, artificial flavors), sugar, cornstarch, less than 1% - corn syrup, gum arabic, Artificial color ( red 40 lake, yellow 6, yellow 5, blue 2 lake, red 40, blue 1 lake, blue 1, blue 2, yellow 5 lake, yellow 6 lake), dextrin. sadly, no case for peanut m&ms, but with detrose as the primary ingredient in smarties, i'd say if you're in a bind and can't find dextrose tabs or powder, they're acceptable to mix with your maltodextrin and protein. ============ Quoting from the_terminator: Some of you may not be aware that a meal containing carbohydrates and protein generates a better insulin response than carbohydrates alone. for instance 100 grams of carbs can give a 300-500 percent increase in blood insulin, and around 65 grams of protein can give you a 100-200 percent rise in insulin, combining the two can give an increase of about 600-800 % rise in insulin. Therefore 50 grams of protein and 50 grams of carbs can give you the same increase in insuline as 100 grams of carbs so I don't know about smarties but it puts a good case for peanut emenems. ============= -------------- excuses are really good for making you fat. margarine is a liar who announces, "i am butter!" |

Nuts would be bad post workout IMO as they slow down digestion. Post workout you want rapidly absorbed energy.
I think chocolate can also slightly delay digestion (presumably because of the fat) - I would stick with the sports drink or dextrose tabs (I've used these). I've heard that jelly babies are supposed to be good too, and presumably boiled sweets would also suffice. |

i bought the diabetics bottle of glucose pills....ie dextrose...but combined total of carbs from it is only 200 grams....I heard that a good amount to take is 40-50g post workout for 200lb person.....seems very little for a bottle that costs 5$....

I also think because it's geared towards diabetics they prolly hike up the price.... | |

That's what I've always read, you want the fastest absorbing mix you can get. I picked up some dex tabs and went ahead and ordered some bags of dex from vitaglo.

Couldn't you find Glucose tablets? Simple, and pure dextrose. The brand my wife uses is ReliOn. It is a national brand. They make testers, etc. Any drug store should have these. They are for diabetics, when you dive. Specifically to cause a rapid rise in blood sugars. Each is 15 calories, 4 sugars/carbs. Here is what another brand looks like. http://www.americarx.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2215-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |
