Supplements and nursing

Are there any supplements that are safe while nursing? I am considering adding in some protein shakes since I am not eating as well as I need to be. I suppose I want to look for something that is purely protein right? Any favorites? I love chocolate or vanilla (but I would want to add fruit to vanilla). If it matters, my baby is 9mths and eating solids as well (so not totally dependent on nursing).

I am trying to toss about 20lbs and am in my second week of the 8wk lose fat program. Workouts are going ok.

My diet is struggling but to my credit, I am not eating junk all the time. I need to work on menu's (any place online that offers up calorie based menu's?). If I have it written out, I have no problem following it, but time and lack of experience prevents me being able to write out a menu for every day that is well balanced.

It's not advisable to take any type of supplements while nursing. Protein shakes are fine, but weight loss/ diet supps are a big no-no while nursing. Just keep eating clean and then if you still want to try supplements after you wean your baby, then you can try a supplement.

I would really ask you Doc before taking a protein shake and or any supplement. Anything that can pass thru the milk should be looked at. that is my advice, I would not want to advise you to go ahead and have it harm the baby. I think the shakes would be ok but better safe than sorry.

Thank you for your input. I am having plain protein shakes now and it has helped my energy and diet goals a lot. I will not take fat burners, etc while nursing (not sure I would even take them otherwise).

I looked into it and pure protein shakes are safe to take for nursing and pregnant mama's. My sister asked her physician and he said it is a great way to get extra protein into the diet (as we all know). This was helpful to her in her first trimester as she had a tough time eating and the shakes literally helped her carry on! The issue is when people take fat burners and other supplements. Definitely a no no!
