I'm new so please forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong place. My biggest problem with dieting is that I eat when I'm not hungry. I know it's all in my head, but is there anything out there that will keep my mind thinking I'm full so that I don't eat mindlessly? I've used Phentermine in the past and it worked like a charm, but I can't afford it anymore and I was hoping someone might have a more affordable alternative. I've tried Hoodia but it doesn't work for me. Any suggestions other than drinking water (tried that) or occupying my time with something else (I have a desk job that keeps me sedentary for 9 hours a day and it's easy to graze through out the day). Thanks in advance.

I don't have a magic pill for you...it really is mind over matter...and I'm struggeling with this problem right now myself...so trust me when I say I know what you're talking about, having said that there is a few things you could try.For me green tea tablets work very well and are inexpensive(at walmart for less than $10)It doesn't take the cravings away but it does take the edge off..remember..just the edge, not entirely. Also eating half of a grapefruit with some splenda before meals helps me make better portion size decisions.I know you said you have tried drinking water...but keep at it...and make sure you are eating good healthy snacks throughout the day.I know when I let myself get to hungry...I forget my good intentions. That desire to just eat...nothing to do with hunger...you just want to eat...is powerful...these are tricks that work for me when I have my gaurd up and know I'm going into "battle" with my mind. These things will help. But it takes a whole lot of effort on your part.Good luck to you...and welcome to FT.

Thanks for your input. I'll definitely try your suggestions. I've tried eating 5 small meals a day just so I don't get ravenous at meal time, but sometimes during the work day, time flies and I miss my mini meals. I've been trying really hard to only buy healthy foods like fruits and veggies to get me through the day, but I'm only human and those junk food cravings are so powerful sometimes that I dive in head-first and binge which is then followed by tremendous guilt. I can't take OTC diet pills anyway because I'm too sensitive to the caffeine, so I will try tea and maybe some meditation? Thanks again for your advice and words of encouragement. It helps to know I'm not alone in my struggles.

If your sensitive to caffeine green tea might not be for you...it does have some,I'm sure you could talk to the pharmacist there at walmart though. It's tough...and I know it's hard to feel like the only one...and it's always nice to know there is someone out there who "gets it"...it can be a rough road!!:)

Green tea also contains L-Theanine, which is actually a relaxant. It counters the effects of the caffine quite nicely. IN fact, it works so well it is actually sold as a supplement by itself.

The science of "satiety" looks at the feeling of fullness delivered by various kinds of foods — with results that may surprise you. For instance, many people guess, incorrectly, that high-fat foods (such as nuts, cheese, and chocolate) would rate high on the satiety scale. Yes, these foods are satisfying in that they taste good, but they are not good choices if you want to achieve a rapid feeling of fullness without consuming a lot of calories.

Pennsylvania State University is famous for the Satiety Index it formulated after years of research. Below are tips for a healthy diet that should keep you feeling full — while still eating in the Zone.

Foods rich in water rank high in satiety, but note that simply quaffing cup after cup of H20 won't do the trick, because that won't satisfy your hunger. Opt for soups, stews, and casseroles.
Likewise, certain fruits are heavy with liquid, bumping them up on the Satiety Index. This time of year, go for oranges, grapefruit, and grapes.
Another trick is to bulk up salads and sandwiches with ingredients that give you something extra to chew through, without piling on the calories. Try adding onions, green peppers, sprouts, and extra lettuce.
Increasing the fiber in your diet is another way to feel more satisfied without adding calories or fat. Research shows that when test subjects upped their fiber consumption by an extra 14 grams of fiber daily, they dropped their caloric intake by 10 percent. As a yardstick, note that an orange has 7 grams of fiber.
Herbs and spices are "free" foods that make meals more savory and, thus, more pleasurable.

WEll, fiber is the answer as far as best bet to satiety, but too much fiber can actually inhibit the absorbtion of many minerals and vitamins. Also too much fiber can play havoc on hormones in males, namely testosterone levels. Test levels can drop like a rock with high fiber low fat intake.
