Does anyone know if getting a tattoo would decrease muscle mass in that area? There was something in muscle and fitness saying it would but I don't beleive them.
Anybody know for sure?

I find this hard to believe as well...knowing what I know about the structure of muscles. What logic does the article use to explain this?

I remember seeing that article. If I recall correctly it said it did effect muscle mass, but very very insignicantly. i will look through my back issues and see what else it said. BQ

The only thing I can think of is the muscle going into shock, like other body parts when you get injured.

I have a fairly large tattoo on my right shoulder, but it looks no worse than the left. So my own very unscientific study says that this is not true.

i have heard of a SINGLE study in italy with a limited number of subjects that stated there were long term effects of the ink causing atrophy in the muscles of athletes near the tattoo.
but thats all that i've heard

now a days all tattoo inks are hypo allergic and don't do any harm to muscle .think about it to make it larger you often tear the muscle and it heals and grows bigger.tattoos if done properly never even reach the muscle it is only supossed to go in skin at most the fourth layer right before the muscle.so if you guys are getting muscle damage from tattoos re-evaluate where you are going to get them

The only thing u should worry about is were u get the tattoo for instance if you get one on ur chest you might not want and try to get alot more muscle mass there because ur tattoo would stretch out with ur skin and gets that faded look.

good answer tex.john the artist sterches the skin to fill in the ink not tattoo streching skin tattoo adapts to skin tone.
