hi all,me b/f and i are starting up the gym next week.we're having our bodyfat% measured 1st.i'm 5ft 5,147lbs and he's about 5ft 8 200Lbs.can we weight train to gain muscle the same time as trying to lose weight or must we first lose weight and then weight train.i was talking to a girl up the gym and she said she isn't touching the weights until shes lost weight by using just cardio machines.we would like to be able to lose weight the same time as trying to gain muscle.can someone also guide us as to which powders we should start taking e.g whey protein, creatine etc, when should we take them and how much and also how many calories should we rougly take in once we start training?one more thing i would love to get in the gym and bang out 5 days a week there but i know i shouldn't do that straight away, how long do you think i should leave it before i go there 5 days a week?thanx for all the info in advance and i would just like to say i think all the professional ppl that give info on this site are wonderful thanx again.cya |

This is one of those that you might be better off doing a search and browse some of the answers previously given. I just did a search using the words "lose fat" and came up with over 400 hits. A lot of people are going to say you can't but I don't agree, especially when you're just starting out. The reason I suggested the search is that there's been some really good info about this topic in the last month or so and it's definitely worth taking the time to look at. |

Welcome and good for you.....! Wow that is a lot of many different questions. I agree with mike...do a quick search read some of the great posts, then if you have anyother questions ask away...I will say this..you can loose weight and gain muscle. But it works like this..fat weighs less than muscle, so when you lift eat right and do some cardio what happens is that the fat is slowly replaced by lean muscle. What does this mean? You at first may see some weight loss, but after a while that will slow down. That is why i always use a cloth measureing tape and measure my waist thighs arms etc. You will see that you are lossing size but maybe not weight. That is ok!!!! SO do not go by the scale that much go by the mirror and how your clothes fit and the tape. Ok you are also right that you need to take it easy at first. Give yourselves 3 months or so then increase the number of workouts. AS for powders..if you eat right you really do not need them. Eat a lot of good proteins (tuna and other fishes, steak chicken) also eat a lot of veges and cut out soda excess sugar, breads. SStick with brow rice, yams for carbs. But that is just a quick answer search around and read up and good luck-------------- Life comes by only once....Live it to the fullest! |

Try follow the fat loss and tone exercise program here at FT. Only doing cardio to loose weight will not get you fast to any great results, better do some weight training WITH a little cardio and of course watch your diet....All the best luck to both of you! -------------- - Nina :o) Les Victoires éternelles sont celles du coeur. |

Do your cardio, but by all means strength train also. As preached a thousand times, muscle burns fat. So if you are building muscle along with loosing fat, the faster your gains will be achieved. Weight training is the only way to "shape" your body. If you are a larger pear, and you just lose weight, you will just be a smaller pear. But with the weights, you can be actually shaping your body as you slim down. Thus a much nicer, leaner look. Taking protein is an excellent idea while doing strength and cardio training as well. Protein is muscle sparing, thus helping to replenish and build muscle, while burning fat simultanousley. I would stay away from the creatine right now. Give yourself a chance to reach your own potential first. If you are just starting out, you may want to start with a 3 day a week workout schedule, just to get your body acclimated, and to keep from instant burnout. It is very easy to do, go too much at first and lose interest. It becomes like a job. Take it slow and easy, and progress will come. Best of luck. |

reading your reply bb1fit really applies to me- larger pear becoming a smaller pear...unless i weight train too.it sounded quite funny though, but you are exactly right and we can't wait to get in the gym.i've just bought some new workout gear and just trying it on and looking at myself in it in the mirror spurred me on-i'm really excited and i know that this is what my life is missing!i walked around the gym the other day checking it out and i just wanted to jump on a machine haha.my main trouble area on my bod is my lower body...i really hope i can change the shape of it!!!!after having 2 kids i really focused on exercise and i managed to really get my abs looking good but the lower body didn't change much.the funniest thing is when ppl see me they get the impression that i'm a fit person because i have a small waist and i have to chuckle to myself...it just goes to show that nipping in at the waist makes you look fitter...although i have started getting a little meatier around the midrift.i'm hoping i can get a stunning 6 pack like beth horn she has a gorgeus body and wicked abs.anyway guys i'll keep you posted on my progress, fingers crossed cya!!! |

I started out at home trying to lose weight and my husband, who also is my trainer had me working out with weights and different exercises. By the way three years ago I weighed in at 250lbs, now I am down to 127. When I met my husband who is a bodybuilder he was very patient with me. After 6 months of at home training I graduated to the gym and the results got even better. I say go with the weight training and the cardio. It worked for me, so much so I will be in my first show in May, standing right next to my husband. |

By the way I forgot to mention that the diet he had me on helped me also. I will be the first to admit that the diet was the hardest part but the rewards of the diet and the exercise keeps me in check when ever that hostess products screams out my name. I now can get into a size three. WOOOO WOOOO |

Funny how you can spend a bunch of money on fad diets, Trimspa, health clubs, and support groups and some of the best advice you can find is on a free site...-------------- That which does not kill you, only hurts real bad. |
