I always wondered how someone like Charlie Atlas built a body of muscle just from calisthetics. Does anyone know if he juiced? Or used weights when no one was looking?

...steroids weren't around back then...

He used kettlebells.....and concepts of isometric tension...

When young Atlas was just a young bony nerd, this big bully kicked sand in his face 1 day while at the beach. Young Atlas then decided he wasnt gona take that crap anymore. He rushed home and ordered a big muscle book from the back of his superman comic book. Six months later, young Atlas was the new king of the beach. :dumbbell:

Has anyone tried the isometric tension methods? I read the article posted by menace and thought I'd try the time based method on my biceps for 4 weeks see if added much size (gonna measure first!)

How many sets would anyone suggest using this method? at present I tend to do 4 on standard 12 10 8 6 and complete 2 excercises eg. barbell curl follwed by concentration curls, I vary this.

I guess the other thing would be is it worth it?

If you're interested in those sort of old time exercises, the best site on the web is http://www.sandowplus.co.uk/Competition/compindex.htm

It is fantastic. They have the Charles Atlas program, a routine written by Rudolph Valentino, stuff by Sandow himself, etc. Well worth a look.

This has been excellent I have made some good size gains despite having some time out for an injury.......although holding the barbell for a count of 40 puts a bit much stress around the back....so getting a preacher curl thing.

Also used it on bench press to even out the power (was weeker at the bottom of the rep and noticed I wasn't going far enough down as got heavier.
