have you ever been at the gym and looked into one of the aerobics studios and seen a woman doing bicycle crunches in front of a mirror in a really short skirt? don't think that i haven't, because i have.

i really can't add anything else to that. i think it speaks for itself.

to me, that just sends out a wrong message, like " i'm a whore, guys come rape me." then the world wonders why there are so many raps and murders. To me, it's not a mystery, it's things like that in which get people raped and killed. Oh well, if thats what they want to do, the so be it, but i know you will NEVER find me doing that. I just have a little more respect for myself.

Umm nobody is "asking" to be raped or murdered. I think you may be taking that a little too far. She may be screaming for attention yes. When a see a skanky chick walking around the gym I dont think about raping her. I dont think she is thinking about being raped either. Maybe tied up and spanked, but not raped.

A lack of common sense AND likes to be tied up and spanked is the most likely explanation.

We have a great gym at work (General Motors Tech Center.. huge complex) and there's a dress code, and I am so glad. I also go to Bally's regularly and it is absolutely frightening what some people consider appropriate gym attire.

PBHottie, having respect for yourself can mean dressing any way you feel comfortable! Dressing in such a manner may make her appear promiscuous and/or foolish, but that never justifies violence against women.

This brings up something I have been meaning to ask.

What exactly is appropriate gym attire? I've never been inside a gym. I'm 41, 5'3" and a size 8 and when I start my weight training class in August I don't want to look frumpy, but I don't want to look stupid either.

My 7 year old has complained on more than one occaision that "You don't look like a mom, you look like a giant kid." I'm not exactly sure why that's bad, but even in jeans and a t-shirt I apparently do not look like somebody's mom. I just want to avoid the whole 40 going on 15 look.

Is shorts and a t-shirt appropriate gym attire?

I would say whatever your comfortable wearing. I like the loose clothes; gives me room to move. Sweatpants/shorts, t-shirt/sweatshirt. I see alot of people wearing skintight stuff, and they say it actually helps them with thier workouts. Can you tell that I have no idea what is appropriate? I just wear what I am comfortable with, and if others don't think it is appropriate; to damn bad! It's not a fashion show!

lol datdanigirl, you're probably right! and mmaibohm, she was young and not bad looking i might add.

in her defense, i think she really was trying to be discreet because she was facing a wall, but i mean the wall had mirrors on it. it's a gym for crying out loud there are mirrors everywhere. of course at one point she bent over, butt facing the studio windows, and it definitely made me drop the stack of weights i was lifting. was she oblivious? perhaps. i haven't seen her again that i know of. i think the only thing about her i would recognize is, well, not her face.

and anni, i always wear some loose shorts and an undershirt or beater type thing to work out. it's not a fashion show in there, and like fryer said, it's whatever you feel comfortable in. i like wearing the tight shirts though because i can see muscle definition and it makes me work harder. anyway, you'll be fine in whatever you choose to wear. i'd go for "not flashy."

Anni, a clever combination of garbage bags can be cobbled together for one clever ensemble. They promote sweating and assure you that you will lose a couple of extra pounds each and every workout. They are also available in the lightly scented option which has obvious advantages. The small waste basket bags make great hats. Be sure you wear them your first day in class because first impressions are most important.

My pal trad suggests incorporating aluminum foil in to the ensemble for added panache and a light coating of vasoline to the face.

Anni I hear the same thing from my 13 y/o daughter. "The cool mom" is good sometimes and like, totally embarrassing at other times.

I usually wear yoga-style pants.. but now that it's getting to summer I'll start wearing shorts occasionally. I'm with Howdiekat on the snug t-shirt or tank top, I want to see the muscle I'm working on.

Loose shorts or t-shirts can be a pain for women, when doing stretches on the floor or tri kickbacks at the bench you have to be aware of the 'bagging' factor.

Also, low-rise pants rolled down to your butt crack with your thong up over your hips is NOT acceptable gym attire. I realize that with todays fashions it can happen accidentally but please .. be aware of your undergarments and keep them in your pants!

It sounds like it's going to be sweat pants, tight t-shirt and an aluminum foil hat. I don't actually have any muscles that I can see, I will just accentuate my breasts until the muscles show up. This seems like a good compromise.

datdanigirl, I'm so glad that I'm not the only person who doesn't fit the June Cleaver thing. My oldest daughter is all about having a "hot" mom, you know Maggie's opinion and my son just wants me to slouch all the time, you know, so my "frontals" don't show so much. The whole mom gig is difficult at times.

Respect is one thing, but to blame women for wearing tight/revealing clothes and getting raped for it is another. Terrible message you just sent PBH. NO woman deserves that. Rape is more of a power issue than it is a sexual issue.

You guys are too much. Just remember and keep in mind why your in the gym. Be curtious and have respect for everyone. I've been a member at the same gym for 15 years and I have seen some really inappropriate attire. You just have to do your best and turn your head the other direction and stay focused on that next rep. But it is hard not to look, especially when they look as good as howdie, datdani and hottie. DAMN!

I like to wear all spandax.......lol and "free ball" j/k

I wear on what it depends on i'm doing........somtimes I wear 2 shirts, so I can tuck one in, cause when I do hanging leg raises I don't like my stomach to show. I'f i work arms i'll go sleavless, I like to watch myself, make sure i'm doing it right and watch them work. But always shorts though.....i hate long pants, especially those "swishy" jogging pants.......damn noise gets on my nerves.

For women and men, be aware just how loose your shorts are. Practice at home lying on a bench with your legs apart, feet flat on the floor like you would for a bench press. It may save you some embarassment later on. Most people at our gym that wear the looser shorts also wear a bike short or something like that under them. And ladies when wearing a scoop neck or lower top get on your hands and knees in front of a mirror at home and decide if what you see is ok for everyone else to see. I know the men will hate me for that one. :dumbbell:

LOL.. that's what I meant by the 'bagging' factor. Even if you have bike shorts or a full sports bra top under, people still try to peek!

Not everyone at the gym is so courteous, enjcmn.. or as *respectfully* complimentary. :)

Last night, a guy comes up while I'm doing hamstring machine curls. Someone else was already working between my set and he told the 'new' guy he had one more set.. This guy replies "It's okay, I just want to watch HER do it." And I can HEAR him, and he's just STANDING there behind me... no shame! I just ignore everything and everyone as much as possible but some people really blow me away... and this is why I give thought and am careful as to what I wear in the gym.

it's really sad that there aren't more gentlemen like enjcmn at my gym:) actually the guys at my gym are pretty nice except for the ones who pull stuff like datdani was talking about. the worst is when you're doing squats and straight leg deadlifts. this is why i try to wear the loose shorts, but regardless of what you're wearing when you do those lifts your a$$ is just out there you know? not much you can do about it aside from throwing plates at people's heads which i find is generally frowned upon.

ivan, no knee highs this time, sorry if that ruins it for you:laugh:

dfly, you got me thinking, and wouldn't you think that somewhere out there, there really is a nude gym? seems like it could be kind of dangerous with all the things that could get "caught" in the machines, under freeweights, etc. ouch, i can't think about that anymore.

Huh-uh.. NO NAKED WEIGHT LIFTING!!!

Haven't you guys seen the Seinfeld episode? Naked squatting is NOT attractive. There are plenty of things that probably look really cool in the buff.. (beach volleyball? swimming? how about yoga?) but squatting and lifting are just not very sexy images.

howdiekat: I hear you on the deadlifts. It can be kind of frustrating/embarr-ass-ing to look up after finishing a set to see some guy staring at your ass-ets >:( I found a way around it - if you use a MP3 player with a belt, just manoevre it so that it covers you up :)

Fortunally for me being in cheerleading, I really don't care about short shorts or low cut shirts, i'm there to do my thing and leave. I help stretch the girls at practice and junk. I look I just don't pay any attention i'm aroundit 3 days a week, so i guess i am immune to the short shorts

Hey anni - you cannot work out unless you have some white, fairly see-through spandex capris (thong optional) and a cut-off hooters t-shirt, mmm-kay?

Azon, crack one off, they won't stare anymore :0

Men make plenty of fashion faux pas 9sopme deliberate, methinks) at the gym as well. nothing like stertching on the floor and having some old guy walk up, start stretching against the wall near you, with his balsac hanging out of his too short shorts... vomit cleanup in aisle one!!!!

Paint Ball Hottie - your thinking is as backwards as the judges who let rapists off the hook because pretty girls in skirts are asking for it. Get over it, get yourself a mini-skirt and do some bicycle crunches. I bet you will feel a new sense of freedom:big_smile:

Seriously, folks, who cares who is looking/what they are wearing, work out and leave it all at the gym. Most people just have no clue how bad they look in their workout attire. I know I look akin to Attila the Hun, face red, angry look (just focused, really) non-descript attire...but I am not there to look good while I am there....

hey azon, if you want to be able to do it on demand start drinking whey concentrate really fast before you work out. the gas and bloating will be unreal:laugh::laugh:

back to the gym attire issue - yesterday i saw a lady wearing a black unitard with hot pink trunk bottoms and hot pink leg warmers over it. she also had on flashy hot pink wristbands and a headband. i was so jealous of her! anni, i think you should copy this to workout in so you can impress your daughter and everyone at the gym:big_smile:

paitballhottie, I think YOU are missing the point.

What a person wears is seldom the catalyst for rape. Rape victims are male and female and range in age from 1 year to over 80 years.

Just because the sky is blue on the day a woman is raped does not mean that blue skies cause rape. Just because a woman happens to be scantily clad on the day she is raped doesn't mean showing skin causes rape.

Rape is more often then not an act of violence, humiliation and physical control having little, if anything to with the victim.

Actually, Amy, I think the foil is for making wings but I need to check with trad.

Mikey Fryer, I did visualize it and it made me kind of hot. I recently stopped smoking and my himmones are funky

Hottie, give it up... rape is about power.

one thing apparently rapists do go for is victims who look weak and are less likely to struggle

another reason to lift heavy!
