Okay there's all these little rules about what can be mixed with what and when. I can't get all this straight! It's like we shouldn't mix fat and carbs, shouldn't eat a certain type of carbs here, but should eat a lot of here, and so on and so on. This all is so confusing for me!

Can someone lay all these rules out to me? Like can I EVER mix fats and carbs? or are they always separate. What about carbs and proteins? when?

aaagh! help!

I agree, it is very confusing. I think if I tried to follow every single recommendation I read I wouldn't have any time for living. I also think that some of them are geared toward hardcore bodybuilders and those who have hit a sticking place. I could be wrong though. I would say if what you are doing works then don't worry about it too much. If you are stuck then you could try 1 or 2 of the suggestions at a time to see if it helps you. Constantly worrying about what, when, how much, and what combination to eat seems stressful to me, and I don't need any more of that in my life. I'm sure you will get some outlines though from some of the others.

The main thing to remember about carbs is they are not the enemy, but they can be 100% converted to blood sugar with 100% efficiency, as compared to protein(58%), and fats 10%. Therefore, once your glycogen stores are full, and maintenace calories reached, there is a very real chance that any excess carbs can and will be stored as you know what, and ingested carbohydrate stimulates the burning of glucose. This increases the risk that any fat eaten alongside it is stored as fat on your body.

So, learn what works for you, keep your numbers (macros) right, and you will be fine.

Tarab21,azredhead57, JessicaR, you make a very valid point. If you are just trying to get into condition, look good and eat right, then it is really not that high tech or confusing. What you should be doing, however, is ensuring that your overall calorie intake is in deficit, if the goal is to lose weight. It is up to you to determine what ratio of that weight lost is muscle and which is fat. I did not mean to confuse any of you, was gearing more toward the more "advanced" athelete with things that can tweak their diet with to a more advanced state in prior posts you may have read, and I sincerely apologize to you all if I did confuse you. My job is to help you, not confuse you, and I hope to do so.

BB, your input on this board has been invaluable to me in planning my own nutrition program. I don't always follow all the high tech advice but it's good to have those techniques available when I need them. So please, no need to apologize. :)

Thanks to you all, always want to be of help, not hinderance. Keep up the great work. This is a lifestyle change we undertake, and it can get overwhelming at times.

Your input, Ron, is invaluable to all of us in one way or another. I have learned to read it and filter out what I don't think pertains to me and keep what does. Eventually I hope to get far enough along in my weight training to need to use more of it. Thanks.
