I just saw an article that stated Gene Rychlak did a 1005lb bench. Found the vid on the net, and I am discouraged regarding the present course of PL.
First, let me say that I'm not taking anything away from the strength of this guy, but this lift was not legitimate; and I'm a little tired of these types of lifts being hailed as world records. It's an insult to the rest of the strength world.
I recognized his type of shirt - equivilant to about a 6-ply. It's over his elbows, and not even past his delts: both normally a dq'd. No pause, no lock out on the lift. And, in all honestly, it didnt even look like 1005 on the bar, though that's what's stated on the vid.
I have watched lifts recently (mostly from the WPO) that would NEVER get a single white light in a normal federation, but gets a 3 light like it was Christmas. I'm also tired of people stating world record totals, when it turns out that they did the 3 lifts on different days, sometimes weeks apart. Let me set this straight: a total is total of 3 attempts of the 3 lifts in a single day meet, not your best lift in a gym with no judges, set weeks apart.
If you're going to juice, fine. Compete against your own kind, then. But using anything more than a basic 1 or 2 ply shirt is bull. It's cheating. Period.
I just find it amazing that the approach to 800 took years, within legitimate feds and meets; then, all of sudden, within 1 year, we go from 800-1000. Am I the only one that finds that fishy????

Sorry 'bout the rambling. Just had ta vent....

Rev8ball I agree with you things have gotten a little fishy as powerlifting has become more mainstream. I think the money envolved now also is leading the sport down the road of ruin. With more money comes more need to use the juice and the 6ply shirts to win.

rev no dispute here.....

Rev why not take powerlifting raw?....

Also Gene did the feat in 2 years....first he got to 900 and then next year to 950 and 1005 in one contest.....he got 1005 on his second attempt from what i read......However the scott mendelson raw bench of around 750~ still holds....gene is a bench press specialist so I don't even think he bothers to do other two lifts in any one competition using militia training....although I think I read that he has done squat over 1000 and deadlifts over 800...but yea...but doing it in one competition is the only way to be legitimate....somehow I doubt he can squat 1000+ after fighting for 1005 bench...

Rev I think Mike hit the nail on the head. It is allbout the money. Now that it is more main stream it will get like that. I have been reading Deepsquatter.com for a while now and those guys are wicked strong. The debate there is firece in that some feel that RAW is the only way and others gear is cool. I am with you that these lifts should be regulated and soon or PL will become like bodybuilding-a sport of the biggest no matter what rules.

yea.....elbows covered...giving him a spring-like effect....

He didn't really pause....it was more like touch and go....

also I don't think he extended fully at the top...

I think it counted just because of the sheer amount of weight being attempted with fairly decent form.....by powerlifting rules....or the ones I watched it wouldn't come close to passing...but nevertheless....

I read it took him 35 minutes to fit into the shirt.....

ugh. Its things like this that really get to me, but I guess its just one of those things that you have to accept, kinda like the guy in the gym 1/4 squatting 600 and thinking hes tough

he looked like he passed out also. They say that at extreme high weights. The pressure generated in your heart reaches dangerous levels.

i think their should be only one federation it would make everything easier. Theis is so much confusion in the sport of PL. If their were only one federation it would make it so much more appealing to people. I also like raw lifs but im in high school and my state makes you play football to PL. All we can use is wraps we wear shorts and a t-shirt. I wish we were allowed at least a suit.

jdog1 here's a little secret go and get a tshirt thats skin tight it will act like a bench shirt to an extent. Also go by a super tight your boys are crying pair of denim shorts. They will act like a squat suit and dead suit.

I read some where about some one trying to bench 1000Lbs, when he would get a hand off with that amount of weight and he would simply hold it there his ears would ring and he could feel his bones flexing.

jdog1 you can imitate the effectiveness of a bench shirt....by buying a shirt designed for 5 year old....which stretches.(granted I am partly exaggerating...but if you can find a shirt that's small...but stretches...and you're XL...you'll get the benefits)...and put it on....granted it might take you an hour....but you'll get the spring effect of a bench press shirt....ditto for the shorts....

I have Medium shirts from when I was skinny ...the black t-shirts you wear under your shirt....when I used it during benching a while ago...I realized how much more I could lift.....

I am guessing Gene's shirt was designed for a 5 year old girl...definetely not for a man that's close to 400 lb...

Yea, that lift was kinda sloppy...for powerlifting that is.

I also thought one had to have a certain grip.....his looked kinda wide, I thought there was a maxiam and minimum to how far or how narrow one can grip the bar.

very good point...his hands were very wide...

also if you look he lifts the weight unequally........which is almost a certain disqualification at almost any meet....

and also is there a certain stiffness the bar has to be in a powerlifting meet?.....because at 1000 lb I hardly see the bar bend....I mean at my gym...even the more stiff bar starts to bend over 500lb....if the bar is somehow stiffer it makes it considerably easier to lift the weight...

I think it didn't bend cause his grip was so far apart. Think about in on squats....you have maybe 16in of somthing touching the bar, with the weight on the ends, makes it "bow"........I dunno though.
