My life as a weight room employee...
"You're hamstrings are a really small, weak muscle, so you don't want to do too much weight. I would start with 30lbs. And this machine does your leg triceps..." "Wait, I can't wear sandals even if I'm just lifting" "How do I train this muscle?" "Can you turn the music DOWN?" There was another one today that made me die inside, I just can't remember it at the moment. -------------- SQUAT MORE ~Jesse Marunde Mortal by birth. Strongman by the grace of god. (Said to person doing weighted decline sit-ups) "So why don't you just do MORE regular sit ups?"
"So you use a barbell, and you do 8 reps from the bottom to the middle, then 8 reps from the middle to the top, then 8 full reps. It's a new technique that SHOCKS! the muscle. They call them 24's" -------------- SQUAT MORE ~Jesse Marunde Mortal by birth. Strongman by the grace of god. Blood Guts Sweat Chalk |

You could probably put anything my high school bball coaches told me (or anything you hear in the bball weightroom) in quotes and list them, on and on and on...I heard so much bs it wasn't even funny-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. Obviously you care enough to take the time to post about it. Other than that, no one should care. It was meant to be a quasi-humorous post that just repeated some rather absurd comments that I am forced to endure.

I wasn't sure if you were sayin "Who cares?" yourself or if you were adding to the list of things you hear in the gym.
None of us were saying we've never been there before, but some of those quotes were ridiculous things to say whether or not we've been in those shoes. You make a good point in that we should be understanding when people ask "dumb" questions, but you know more than I do that a lot of people ask questions that they don't REALLY want to learn the answer and apply it. They just want to be spoon-fed. It's not so much the fact that people have ingnorant questions or ideas, it's the fact that so many people in the gym that spend 50% of time training and 50% talking and want to tell everyone of their abundant training wisdom. I think everyone knows what I'm talkin about here. Is this really worth arguin about? -------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. This is the reason I joined and payed for a gym membership for one year before I ever walked through the door. I was afraid of the stupid questions I would have. I ended up hiring a PT, after the year of not going, so that I would get my answers one on one. I still hesitate to post in here for fear of sounding a bit ignorant.........I just keep telling myself, there is NO dumb question.-------------- Success is not for the chosen few but rather for the few who choose it. |

I used to have this employee of mine who would come into my office saying, "I have a stupid question." I always replied, "there are no stupid questions, only stupid people who ask questions."
This of course does not apply to anyone here. We are here asking our questions to learn! |

No. I at know point tried to teach people about things I know nothing about, I've always had the common sense to wear shoes in a public weightroom, and if I'm new at a place where everyone else is clearly comfortable with the music level, I don't ask them to change it just for me.
Maybe I should explain that I am talking about a collegiate weight room where every fall a new cycle begins with people that aren't just new, but lack common sense, flood the weight room. ============ Quoting from gatormade: I care enough to ask because you act like you never have asked any of these questions growing and developing. ============= -------------- SQUAT MORE ~Jesse Marunde Mortal by birth. So they lack common sense. Educate them on proper etiquette. I have incoming freshman that ask silly questions but I chalk it up as inexperience. I tell them about it and they learn from it.

I p'ed a dude off at the gym the other day because he asked if he could work in with me while I was doing my DE box squats. He said he could just toss the weight he needed on top of what I had on there, but I told him that I only rest about 30 seconds b/w sets and he would take too long to rack, squat, and unrack.
Anyway, he acted like it hurt his feelings or something because I wouldnt' let him work in. |
