i'm a more than a few pounds overweight, but would really like to change that this year, i've been pretty good the past few weeks about not buying any fattning snacks, so dont have those in the house, i need to start an exercise program and have printed one off of here that seems like it would help, but my question is, should i being doing just 30-45 min of cardio, like 5days a week, or do i need to work out like 2 or 3 hours in order to lose 50 pounds by summer? i know i have a better chance at keeping off the weight if i do it slow, but i'm very impatient:(

Welcome to Ft and remember, patience will help you keep that weight off...I look at it this way, it takes a while to get used to another lifestyle, another way of thinking about food and exercise, it isn't all about how my body reacts, but that my brain takes time to soak it all in and allow me to make the changes, but if jump in fast, I end up jumping out fast, too. I have myself a goal of October 6, 2006, now in-between, I know that I will be looking better, feeling better. You need to first figure out the amount of calories your body needs for energy each day, then you need to take the 50 pounds you want to lose and pick a goal date, let's say you picked June 30th, so that is six months, you could say that 50x3500 calories (which is one pound) and then divide that by the number of days until June and you will have to burn (best through a combination of less calories per day and exercise) 973 calories a day more than what you are needing now. So, if you needed 2,400 calories a day, you could exercise 487 calories off a day and eat 487 calories less -- now this is just an example, that is why the longer you take to lose the easier it is as you can eat an amount of calories that is best for you. FT has a great program here and helps you figure out everything, too!
Good luck to you!

Generally you should plan to loose no more than 1-2 lbs per week. Soooo...50lbs would take about 25 weeks or 6 months. May seem too long, but it's really the only way to establish a lifestyle change that you can maintain. Start today, and you'll be there by summer time. You will likely loose more in the first few weeks, but will tend to taper off and may even plateau at some point. You just have to stick with a healthy diet and workout doing cardio 3-4X (30 min/session) per week and some resistance training 2-3X (45min-1hr/session) per week. Take 1 day per week as a rest day.
There is no easy or magic solution, it is a hard journey, but sooo worth it. Diet is key and exercise helps you along and gives you that nice toned look.
Good luck to ya!
