hi,
how much time should you leave to rest between sets on the same exercise. for example a bench press or biceps curls?

6289. I would say thirty five seconds,to forty five seconds, but if you was doing maximum poundage I would take three minutes to five minutes to rest before trying another set of the same poundage, have you ever done supersets or anything of this nature.

dont rest more than 3 minutes.. between a minute and 2 is pretty normal, less if you want a more intense workout, or up to 3 if, like blue said, you are going for higher weight

blue i am not sure what a superset is! i think i rest too long between sets then! damn i will have to get quicker, thanks for the information. But what is a superset and are they a good thing to do? i am trying to bulk up by the way.

Ok, I agree with what bropie said by saying "do not rest for 3 to 4 minutes" that is way too long to rest. If you are wanting to bulk up then you need to do a very intense work out. In order to do that I rest 45 seconds between sets, 1 minute and max. 30 seconds just is not enough time, you wont get as much as you need out of a set if you only rest for 30 seconds. So rest for 45 seconds to 1 minute between sets.
To answer the question of what a super set is. Say you were doing biceps and triceps in one day. Normally you would do a bicep exercise, then a tricep exercise, then another bicep exercise, and keep on switching body parts until you did all of the exercise that you could do. However on a super set, you don't seperate the 2 body parts when exercising. Say your routine for the day looked like this:
-Curl
-Kick back
-Hammer Curl
-Press Down
Rather than doing your 4 sets of curl and then doing your 4 sets of kickback, you would combine them. Meaning, you would do a set of curl, then immediately after you would do a set of kick back. A superset is just combining 2 different exercises in to 1, thus they call it a "super" set.
Anyways, back to your question to sum it up, rest for 45 seconds to a minute. I would not recommend you doing supersets, they are not a whole lot more productive and are much more draining of your energy. If you want give it a try though just to see how it goes. Good luck.

erebus I disagree ......sure if you pick some light isolation lifts...30 seconds might be dandy...but I can't even proceed without resting 2-3 minutes on my curls...
I rest sometimes upwards of half hour between my maximal lifts...at the very least 5 minutes...you try 101% squat or deadlift(attempt on pr)...then tell me how long you rest...between that and your next set which is also your max....I can't talk much less walk for first 5 min of deadlifts/squats, and sometimes after heavy rows and a couple other exercises....I am not saying resting 30 min between set is for everyone...nor am I saying 5 minutes is necessary for everyone between every exercise...What I am saying is that don't dismiss long rest periods ....they are vital....sure resting 30-60 sec ebtween lateral db raises is dandy...but I want you to try to do that after your max deadlift and squat and see how that goes.....I rest 2-5 minutes between heavy biceps sets....
according to recent research 2-3 minutes is the ideal recovery period for most people on heavy lifts....(squat, deadlifts, bench, etc)
