Lunges . . . I love to hate them.

My knees are kinda funny, too and I'd like to do things as low-impact as I can so I can have knees when I'm older. What's the opinion on standing lunges? (I think that's what they're called). . . just as effective? Less effective?

What I'm doing now for lower body is:

- leg press
- seated leg extentions
- hamstring curls
- straight leg dead lifts
- inner / outer thigh
- calf raise

But I keep hearing, lunges, lunges and LOTS of them. Standing lunges just as good? Anybody. . .??

Thanks, Nik

Lunges are an EXCELLENT excercise. Doing lunges, squats, leg presses, etc will actually help your knees. These excercises help thicken and strengthen the tissues surrounding the knee, therefore making your knees stronger so they're not so frail and weak when you get old. If you have bad form when doing power cleans or while squating ridiculous amounts of weight, you may be prone to some sort of serious knee injury. But performing normal excercises like lunges will actually be to your benefit.

The reason why you keep hearing talking about lunges is because it works......
You got long legs and you need to stretch them and lunges is absolutely great for that -it'll give you long lean looking and nicely shaped legs.
When doing lunges you work in harmony with all the muscles. Of course it's hard (I even suffer more with lunges than with squat!!) but you'll love the results.

Now wasn't that enough to convince you? (o;

What is the best way to lunge? I've heard varying opinions.

Stepping forward and then pushing back...or...putting one foot in front and one in back and then lowering toward the floor until back leg is parallel to floor?

Thanks!

I personally like the second way. Supersetting these with squats is a killer leg workout. Either way should work fine.

Change! Vary! I do every small thing, jumping back or forward, using the Smith machine or free weights, changing the weight and number of repetitions etc

Vary and you'll get great legs and never bored!
