I am trying to lose weight - approx 35lbs - and tone up and have a question about protein shakes. Would you recommend using protein shakes on a weight lose program ( I am on the home exercise program )or are the shakes mainly to boost size? If the shakes are recommended, how much protein, carbs and sugar should I look for in them? How much would be too much of each?

Try and do the shakes. It will not give you fatty gains if you make sure the carbs are close to Zero, and same with the fat. Look for a protein that is about 25 grams per serving and scoop size at about 30.
Go for whey Isolate, as that is the best quality in powders.
