Hello,

I am new to the community but would love any advice you all have on training paralympic athletes.

I recently have been asked to train a good friend of mine who is training for the 2008 Paralympics in the shot put.

I have some great training ideas but would love to hear what you all might have.

He is in a wheelchair and has some function of his legs (very little) but needs some core strength. (abs, lower back, etc.)

Let me know what you might have.

Thanks.

That is awesome! I have a ton of respect for Para-Olympians.

Next year, another coach and I are going to start strength & conditioning training para-olympic athletes at a new camp out here in Vegas for sports such as weightlifting, basketball, volleyball, and a few others.

Physiological aspects remain constant, and most of the basic S & C principles transer pretty much straight across (strength and power movements, plyometrics, etc.) with some exceptions due to physical limitations. Check out the NSCA's website and its journal archives. They have some great articles regarding training Para-Olympians.

Best of luck!

Strength & Conditioning is not everything; it just really sucks to be weak and slow.

Thank you!

I will revisit the NSCA's website and see what is available.

Best of luck in developing your new camp for para-olympic athletes.
