It's something I really would love to do. I am battling it with architecture. I believe I would love my job more if I was a personal/athletic trainer, but I would probably be more secure financially as an architect. I also don't really know what it would be like to make it as a professional trainer, but I am very interested. This is my senior year of high school, so it's just been on my mind a lot lately. Gator, what was it like to climb your way up to being a trainer at a university? I would really like to know some info on this stuff.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. I dunno, I guess I really just want to be a part of revolutionary training. I want athletes around here to have cutting-edge training like I get by learning all this from you guys and other places. The problem is getting started and becoming known. I guess having to do all these tedious workouts from coach that have done me no good motivate me to help the athletes that come after me so high school sports where I go can get some good training. I would also love to train college/pro athletes, but that's just what motivates me right now becausae it's what I'm goin through.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. I know what you mean. I went from almost going to school for exercise physiology to computer engineering. I really would love to train, but Ive already declared my major, and going to RIT, theres not alot to choose from in the way of exercise science. I guess I choose it because it was more financially secure, and it was something I know I could be successful with. Not that I dont think being a trainer would be a successful living.
Im going to tell you something that I feel now, having already made the decision. Go with what would make you happy. Yes, I am interestd in CE, but not like I was with training. Its something I will always look back on and wonder... what if? I don't mean to push you one way or the other, but that is how I feel. -------------- Your two most important minerals: Iron and Chalk. Yeah it's always what I've been told. My brother has worked at ups for 5 years now, but he is quitting and going to be a policeman which is taking a big paycut and losing a lot of financial securities later on, but he said he just isn't happy at his other job, but he's always wanted to be a cop so he is quitting. I think he's crazy in a way, but I see why he's doing it. I mean, life is too short to not just be happy with what you do. But, on the other hand, would you really have to major in that sort of thing? I mean from what I've heard it's not so hard to become a certified SAQ and/or Weight trainer. I mean you might not have the background that some people look for, but then again if you know what you are doing and are very successful with your clients, you might be able to work your way up or end up running your own business. See, I think I'm going into architecture, but that I'll personally train athletes or whoever else on the side and just maybe it would end up being very successful considering the huge lack of trainers in my area. -------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. On the huge lack of trainers thing. Heck I dunno if there are many trainers around here but all of the ones I have come in contact with are all the same, or they work at a gym or somethin. None of them really seem like the type that would make a huge difference in people like a Joe DeFranco or someone along those lines. I would love to end up like that! Have you seen his new facility? Dang that would be awesome.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. I am not a trainer. Trainers deal with the injured. I am a strength and conditioning coach/specialist/professional. It takes a lot of hard work and patience to do the job I do. I spend 10-14 hours a day at work 7 days a week. Last year I worked 51 weeks straight with a maximum of 2 days off in a row. You must love this job to last long at it. If you train athletes on the side then make sure you are insured. The first time someone gets hurt and they decide to sue you and you are not insured or certified, they will bankrupt you. Wrestler, you talk like a 50 year old guy. You have lots of time to make up your mind about being in this field. Do an internship at a college to see if it is something you want to do.

I am going to RIT, the closest thing to exercise science is biomedical engineering physiology. So it will be difficult to make a change.
But thank you gator, you are right. I probably should sit down and think about this. -------------- Your two most important minerals: Iron and Chalk. If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. |

Sorry I didn't mean to say trainer Gator. Just a habitual thing I guess. Yeah I always thought about that if someone got hurt thing, and I would definitely be insured and make sure they sign all the paperwork necessary. I dunno Matt I was just talkin, but I really think I would have a passion for the job as well. If you don't mind me askin, what kind of money is generally made in this profession?-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. The money depends on where you are at. Any where from 20,000 to 150,000. Depends on what sports you work. Top football strength coaches make a ton of money. Bigger schools pay better than smaller schools (for the most part). Wrestler, you could always do a masters degree in a related field. It's not hard to do.

Yea, but Im a computer engineering major. Not a lot of relation there. Do you think changing majors would be easy? I would probably have to change schools though... How hard is the degree?-------------- Your two most important minerals: Iron and Chalk. If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. |
