greetings all, great site. I started working out 2 weeks ago with my weider 8 station machine. My workout starts on the treadmill for 5 min uphill, then 2 reps of 20lb curls then 50 sit ups. on the machine I do 50 leg presses, 20 bench presses, 20 pull downs,20 leg curls 15 butterflys. then I do all the machine excercises again. then I cool down on the treadmill for 3 min. I do this at 7:30 in the morning and 7:00 in the evening. each session lasts for 40 minutes. Is this a good way to start? I am real new to this. I guess my goal is loose a little bit of flab and build body mass. I am 42 yrs old and weigh 170 lbs. I am also trying talk my wife into doing this with me before we both get to old and fat. All comments and suggestions appreciated.

Sounds to me as if you are doing to many reps for each exercise. Also, once a day is plenty but if you feel the need to have two sessions try cardio for one and weights for the other. You need to break your workouts into sets with each set consisting of 5-15 reps. You should really look at some of the routines provided here at ft. They will set you up with a good solid program or search the boards for a wealth of info on the subject. Oh and by the way, congratulations on your new commitment.

Welcome to the site eggharbor. I would have to agre with agamble and even add some.
It's great to see you wanting to get into shape again but you have to work up to it gradually. Try the lean mass and tone program on here or do 6-12 reps per set of 3.
Don't nag your wife to get into it, that could be the worse thing you can do. She will join you when she feels ready and you will be a good coach for her.
Good luck and hope you reach your goal.

Thanks for the warm welcome and great advice, The number in my exercise routine is not the reps. 15 bench presses means I do 15 bench presses. Then I do the whole routine again. I am trying to start with a good general purpose work out that works all muscles, then I will concentrate on specific muscle groups. Does that make sense? I am 3 weeks into this and I am seeing results already. Pants are getting loose and I feel great. Thanks again agamble and carivan. I am still finding my way around this website. I think I did my profile right.

The problem with doing too much to soon is the tendency to overwork the muscles and burn out. Like carivan said get a good program like the one he suggested and follow it going slowly at first. Add to it as you get more comfortable, fit, and motivated as you see results. About your wife, mine did just as carivan said. Again good luck.

eggharbor, are you in the town that makes those fine boats by that name? I agree with carivan and agamble about the wife. Mine observed me lifting for many years and never took an interest. As this maturity thing caught up with us she read up on some nutritional info her Dr. suggested. One of the articles she read suggested weight and resistance training. She developed her own reasons for getting into it. She started an 8 week beginners routine about 3 months ago. Last week she paid for a pro membership and is doing her own thing here. Been married 23 years on the 18th of this month and I've learned that a spouse can be encouraged but not "bossed" into anything. Her results have been pretty amazing. Hope this helps.

Hi Charlie, Thanks for the info. I actually live in Mass but I own a 33' Egg Harbor. You could say we are boating nuts (you have to be to own one $$$) I have stopped bothering her about working out with me, I will just wait until she really wants to. Our 23rd wedding aniv is the 22nd of this month. We are newlyweds compared to you two LOL. I am just going to keep going and hope she joins in.

Small world huh?? We have a 30' Larson thats up for sale. Looking at trawlers in the 36 to 42 foot range. Are you a boatered.com member? Great sight. 1980 was a great year huh? Best of luck with your fitness goals. By the way the paid membership here adds many benifits to an already great sight.
