Treadmill Issues....

So this week has been okay. I went to the gym on Tues and Wed. I was doing the treadmill but I have noticed that only 5 minutes into the walk my calves get really sharp pains along with the bottoms of my feet. (I have really flat feet). So I went ahead and tried the machine that works your arms back and forth and your legs like your walking but in a circular motion. Would that be okay instead of doing a mile on the treadmill? I went ahead and did 20min last night and am planning on working my way up. Please let me know! Thanks!

You mean the elliptical trainer? Personally, I prefer my cardio on non-impact machines like the stationary bike or elliptical trainer...less shock on the knees and legs. Do what's more comfortable for you.

Yes it will. I elliptical trainer is I believe what its called. The trick is to get your heart rate up tp about 75% of your normal heart rate for around twenty minutes.
You can achieve this using any form of cardio, such as the sycle machine, rowing machine, treadmill and whetever else grabs your fancy.

I can't offer advise or suggestions on the pains in yopur feet and calf, but can reccomend in any event that you give your muscles a good stretch before working out.

Well I do make it a point to stretch at least 5-10 minutes before I start anything. I just couldn't handle the pain. I feel like I got more of a work out on the elliptical trainer thought and it was definatly more enjoyable then the treadmill.

The same thing happens to me if I don't stretch real good. If you don't mind it and you achieve good results, do the elliptical. Like Robert said, "Low impact." You will thank yourself one of these days.

If your legs aren't in shape yet, that will happen on the treadmill. Build up the stegnth in your legs fist then try it again. Like the others stated, stick to the low impact stuff.
The condition you were experiencing is known as shin splits.
Shoes can have alot to do with it also.

Shoes do make a big difference. I have a pair of new balance that i strictly wear for working out. I know about pain my feet dont hit the ground right I have a serius under pronation issue so I wear out a pair of sneaks every 3 months. When I hit the tread mill I have serious pain in the front of my shins from it.
