i may not be 100% correct on this, so if im not, please someone correct this: For abs to show through, you have to have a deficit in your caloric intake (take in less energy than you use). But if you're trying to build up your chest, you're going to be growing, therefore you want to have a higher caloric intake. Basically, before you undergo your quest for abs, you have to be happy with your current muscle size because you won't get any bigger if youre trying to show off that six pack. Now if by build up your chest you mean Get your abs to show through, well then Diet is the key. Get the health eating and caloric intake set and keep to a good solid routine and youll get your results. Good ab workouts are all over the place. First place i would suggest checking is the "fitness Resources" provided to you by FT.com (here) Just go there and look at the specific muscle groups, click on abs, then click on specific exercises and it lists GREAT exercises. My personal favorite are good old fashioned crunches with weight across your chest. A good workout is getting there, but resistence is the key. Make sure with all cruches etc you do, have resistence (added weight such as books or something across your chest) hope that helps some...

I've heard that, for abdominal muscles to show, one's bodyfat percentage MUST be in the single digits. That's why mine don't show despite my hundred-pound loss and careful exercise adherence. (That and all the loose skin on my abs!) My BF is 19%, "great" for a man my age, says my trainer, but hardly single digits!

I believe I was the one that wrote that. :) I read it from an online source this past week but don't remember where or if it's actually true. It said 12% or lower, but I would guess you'd have to do ab resistance training as well to get the muscles to show through even at those percentages.
