Hey there. I am new to this, just started today actually. First off, I will say that I am not overweight, I am frikin' obese! I hate it. I am just now realizing how much I need to change. Anyway, I went to the gym today and I went to do my work out. I just basicaly chickened-out. I felt out of place walking into the room with all these fit people working out. So I just left the exercise room and screwed around the whole time and didn't really do my work out. I was just wondering if anyone out there would give me some tips starting out. Is there anyone else out there who was really overweight and then changed? Please help.

Well, the first thing I would say is talk to your gym - they usually have at least one "trainer" session when you join. This is where they show you how to use the different machines. That will give you a head start on the machines. As far as blocking out the other people - is there a time you can go when there's less people?
You're just going to have to own up to the idea that you're overweight, and if you're at the gym - who cares what the other people look like - at least you're there trying to do something about yourself right?

I am still overweight but I have lost weight (70lbs) from my highest of 270lbs (yikes!) I had the same problem when I first went to a gym. Just remember that the majority of those people are most likely silently rooting for you! I was surprised once I got over my initial shyness how many people once they realized I was serious and saw me all the time would come up and say really great things. You've already taken the first step by going to the gym. Now just ignore all those negative feelings and do what you can. Remember that those people are there in the gym to do something for themselves and most likely aren't even paying attention to you! Instead of thinking of yourself as an obese chicken think of yourself as an inspiration and picture yourself healthy and fit. If that doesn't work pretend you are invisible (silly I know but the strangest things help!) Do whatever you can to talk yourself into that room. Just go in there and do it!

Many of those people were at one time just like you and struggled with some of the same issues. You recognize what you need to do in order to reach your goals of health and fitness. As was said above most will be rooting for you (we are)show them you are serious and you might be surprised at the response.

Total idiot, most of us were at one time. Many still are. The folks above are right. We have all been there and are pulling for you. It helps us to help you if you take a minute to fill out your profile. From experience I can tell you that if you do a little research here and learn to eat properly, add in the right exercise the weight will come off very quickly at first. This will be tremendous incentive. Later on the last 5 or 10 bpouds gets tough. By then you will be hooked on a healthier fitter lifestyle.
It takes guts to reach out like you have. We all know it. Hang in there.

Hi there.
I was you ten months ago. I suggest you find a treadmill and start walking. Don't worry about the other folk, they are there for the same reasons as you....
"where you are now they have been, where they are now you still need to go"
Good luck.
