Is it possible to try and get a ripped six pack while also trying to gain muscle? If so, what steps should I take to get there excercise wise as well as nutrition

a couple things,
first - fill out your profle second - the abs program is a good start Third - fill out the nutrition portion of your profile and try to stick close to it. Your abs will show mainly from your diet. |

usually to see your abbs you have to get rid of a little bit of body fat. To do this you have to have a caloric defficate( les in than you put out) . In other words say you eat 2000 calories a day, and you" burn" 2500 worth of calories a day, then those other calories will come from body fat stores. However if your trying to gain muscles you need extra calories to build muscle. diet is the key to everything, i'm not saying what you want to do is impossible, but its would be very very hard, stick with one or the other muscle gain, or a 6 pack.
hard for me to say with no profile or any info on you -------------- ---andrew.......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! LEAVE YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR!! |

To get a 6 pack, you must be happy with your current muscle size, as you will not gain any. As Andrew says, you must create a caloric deficit, this does not allow enough calories for gaining. You must tap into your fat stores, and this will negate any chance of muscle gain. (after your newbie stage of course).-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... |

I believe you have to have around 12% bodyfat to be able to see your 6 pack. It is definitely possible with all the great advice everyone above has given.

it seems to me that you just need to gain muscle to show your six pack and don't have to worry about diet. stick with crunches, reverse crunches and some kind of oblique exercise. just do 3 sets of 24 with no weights to start out. it depends on what you want to do if you want to add weight or increase reps. add weight if you want mass.-------------- free your mind -Logger |

On the contrary, you need to be lean for your "six pack" to show. And in order to build one in the first place, you must use weights.

So you are saying that you can't gain muscle and get a 6-pack at the same time? So why do weight training and Ab exercises if only 1 of the 2 will work?

I think itd be easier to go for muscle size first, then trim for a six pack. I have a six pack but I think with all these new calories intake Im taking for muscle mass I'll gain the muscles buy will proly loose the six-p.

i dont worry about six packs, i think if you can see the basic shape then your there. but this is just my view and im sure that many(if not everybody) will disagree with this.

either way - I still have a ways to go - I'm at about 30% according my scale, some other things have said I was 18% - anyone know of a chart or something that gives the right amount? I don't believe ones that just ask for hieght & weight-------------- Reddy All people smile in the same language |

Reddy, the various web charts have had my BF% all over the place too. We bought calipers at a fitness store to get a once and for all answer. The charts don't match what the calipers say. They were $20. :dumbbell:-------------- Some times life is like herding cats. Charlie | |

I don't even WANT to know what my BF% is. You know what? We don't even have a bathroom scale.
For me, I work out, eat decently and drink water. I'm afraid that if I keep such close tabs, the results will be nil and that would not keep me motivated so I only judge how well I'm doing by the jeans I put on in the morning. -------------- The average dog is nicer than the average person. -Andy Rooney |

Ignorance is bliss ... at least in my world! :) hee hee hee I have a fat caliper...but I'm not quite sure if I'm using it correctly....the instructions are not very clear (maybe I'm just dense) My jeans depress me, as they are getting tighter, not looser :surprised: At this point though, I'm going to attribute it to stress, lack of sleep and the fact that I've been holed up in the library doing legal research.....bleah, I feel like an android on depressants right now. But not to fear (so I tell myself), as soon as this project is done I am hitting the weights ...... I might even find time to add back cardio....

Reddy from your pictures you don't look 18% bf. Get some calipers and test. You might be mildly surprised.

Since it's not, you've either measured your BF% incorrectly and it's higher than that, or you need to build up your abdominal muscles. Crunches will only go so far for ab muscles - to get a more prominent six-pack, try decline situps (weighted is even better), weighted leg raises, etc. |

muscle gain and abs showing is very hard u need to seperate the two, first you cannot get abs while trying to gain muscle because of calorie intake and output.
