OK, from my understanding, L-Arginine is a non-essential amino acid which becomes essential with stress, injury or starvation, etc. I have read that it's most important functions are the stimulation and production of insulin, growth hormone production, and aiding immune function.
It is also reported to be a sexual stimulant.

Now, that being said, my mother swears by it as being a major key to her phenominal weight loss over the summer.

If this is true, I would guess the answer is because it helps facilitate an increase in lean muscle and a reduction of body fat...am I close?

L-Arginine is an amino acid that has several roles in the body, stimulating immune function, and promoting secretion of several hormones, including glucagon, insulin, and growth hormone.

Arginine is also a precursor to nitric oxide, which the body uses to keep blood vessels dilated, allowing the heart to receive adequate oxygen. This is why it is such a great aid to pumps in the gym. This is also why if you notice the new NO type vasolidator products all contain some form of it. The problem I have found and most of us is that the doseage to recieve these benefits is pretty high, and becomes not very cost effective.

As far as it being her reason for weight loss, I would look more to her diet and what she did, not the L-Arginine.:big_smile:

If I may add...When I was dieting down and upping my protein(350g per day), one of the end products of protein is ammonia. Because of my high amount of protein intake, I began to smell like ammonia when I sweated. I wasn't too crazy about that so I inquired through a physician. She told me take 2-3 grams of arginine per day because it is able to flush out the ammonia. Needless to say, after two weeks of continued use, I was able to stop smelling like cat piss(ammonia).

So basically, it didn't do all that much to help her, but it certainally didn't hurt her either. I think I am going to agree that it was what she did...she helped my Daddy do lots of yard work...pushing the wheel barrel and moving landscaping bricks...you could almost say she was doing back door weight trainning, you know? Thanks for the information fellas!

(and j....as long as you weren't spraying, it's all good)

bblfit, when you say high dosages are needed, how high do you mean? I have seen a few articles that recommend people to take 15 grams before bedtime on an empty stomach.
