I have been told this story many MANY times since I have started my diet a couple years ago. Tuna contains trace amounts of mercury and therefore eating too much of can cause health problems.
I realize that this must hold some truth... But how much truth? I was told that a person should never eat more then 3 cans of tuna a week (and I eat like 6...). I did a bit of quick internet research and found that white tuna in water contains the highest concentration of mercury. Which is funny because I never realized there was different types of tuna (mines always been kind of brownish).
I guess my question is how much truth is there to this? Should I find another cheap source of easy protein to take for lunch? Or should I just keep on saying, "well, the first one of us to die from tuna can be a martyr for the rest" and eat my sandwich?

there are different types of tuna - two main types in the cans. chunk light & solid white albacore. if you're okay w/the chunk light (i really hate the word chunk. pains me to keep typing it.), stay with it. the albacore is more expensive, but it's tough to switch back to the cheap stuff :)
not sure about mercury levels. i think if you're not pregnant, it's okay...? seems like every so often this creeps up in the news and then goes away. hope it's just rumors, cuz i had like four cans last week.
little help here?

Canned tuna isn't so bad especially not for a guy.
Here's a thing I found on the net. Hope this helps.

hahaha well that's funny. My mother craved tuna when she was pregnant with me and ate it CONSTANTLY. I've always loved it and eaten it all the time. And look at me ... I'm perfectly normal ... or am I ? teehee! <EG>

Haha. Well the way I see it is almost every body builder probably scarfs down tuna like its going out of style... and not one has died from mercury poisoning yet. I mean some fishermen eat tuna everyday of their life and I have never read a report of them dying... Of course with growing amount of pollution in our oceans things may have changed.
So the first one of us to drop dead from OD'ing on tuna will go down in history as a hero. :P

Mostly it's a danger to babies and children with developing brains. But, they even recomend pregnant women to eat it once a week as well as other fish...just not to eat too much.
I believe that in an extreme case you could die from mercury poisoning but that is very unlikely and you would probably have to eat tuna steaks night and day and maybe then you'll get it. So unless your pregnant I wouldn't worry about it.

Hehe.
I think its safe to say the chances of me becoming a pregnant woman are pretty slim.
