I have seen some stuff the last few years saying that Turkey makes you sleepy because of a certain chemical in it.

I love turkey and eat it all the time and yes it does make you a tad bit sleepy but it's nothing a 10 minute nap won't take care of.

My question is ... do any of you smart people know anything that you can eat along with turkey so it won't make you tired in the first place?

I watched some show on T.V. about urban myhts and they said that it's not true. they said there is a chemical in turkey that can make you tired but the amout is way to small to effect you.

Turkey does have the makings of a natural sedative in it, an amino acid called tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid, meaning that the body cannot manufacture it. The body has to get tryptophan and other essential amino acids from food. Tryptophan helps the body produce the B-vitamin niacin, which, in turn, helps the body produce serotonin, a remarkable chemical that acts as a calming agent in the brain and plays a role in sleep. So you might think that if you eat a lot of turkey, your body would produce more serotonin and you would feel calm and want a nap.

Hope this helps!!!!!!

I recently saw a report saying that it wasn't really all about the L-Tryptophan. Even though this amino has a relaxing effect, the amount in turkey was not that much higher than any other product that naturally contained it. What was the major culprit of the sleepy-ness was the excessive consumption of carbs in a short amount of time at the Thanksgiving dinner. After the initial massive insulin spike, the body "crashes," giving the individual the tired feeling, alot like the feeling after eating a really sugary snack, but on a much grander scale.
