How are you supposed to grip the bar? palms facing out/forward or facing in/back??
Also, just for the heck of it, what do you think a decent (strength wise) 20 year old whose relativley new to weight training should be able lift in a close grip or wide grip machin pulldown?
How much do you lift?

Usually plams facing away from you but for a change you can face them in, works differtn muscles. Also each pull down machine is slightly differetn. Some i can pull sown 200 -250 for 6-8 reps or more and others I can get 180....

how come the difference in the amount of weight you can pull? how do the machines differ?
I'd have thought there wasn't much you could do to change the amount of force that a cable/pulley system requires you to apply to lift a certain amount of weight?
And I'm going for a broader back (part of the broader shouders deal, *sheepish grin*), which should i do in that case? towards or away?

It can depend on the number of pulleys that different machines have. For a wider back I would face your grip away and go heavy. Switch it up though and do close grip, do palms facing you grip, etc. I prefer to do pullups though personally.
