It varies so much nowadays it can go from no vacation to up to a month if not more depending on how long you are employed with a company.

It all depends where you work... some start at two weeks and after a few years you get more...

I can't remember the last time I worked a 40 hour week. ;)

Where I work we get PTO, which is earned at just under 7 hours per 2 week pay period and accumulates to a max of 300 hours (at which time we can request a cash payout if we don't want to take time off). Sick days, personal days, mandatory holidays and vacation all come out of the one bucket and it works out to a little over a month altogether. It would be unusual for someone to actually take off for more than a week straight. Some employees will not take a vacation for years, then plan a two week vacation. Most of us just take off a couple of days tacked on to a weekend for little mini-vacations. Then people like me almost never take time off--we have a policy here that you can cash out 40 hours of PTO at a time, as often as you want, as long as you keep 80 hours in your PTO bank. I like to do that and put the money in my savings account at 5.05%.

What we call 'leave' is time off without pay where basically they promise you will still have a job when you come back (not necessarily the same job, but something comparable), and is usually only granted under special circumstances.

Where I work, we get 3 PTO days per year, plus 3 sick days.
Besides that we get stat holidays, and the labour laws here require an employee to 4% pay or time off per year as vacation. After 3 years it is 5%.

I get 2 months off during the summer months, two and a half weeks for Christmas, a week for Thanksgiving, a week for spring break, plus all the major holidays off. I rather enjoy teaching...

Exactly! Nothing irks me more than killing myself to lavishly clothe some other guys family.

Very true which is why self-employment is the way to go. You can be your own boss, make your own money for yourself and make your own schedule.:big_smile:

Had I not been self -employed as I am right now, I wouldn't be able to have as many vacations as I have taken this year alone.:)

I feel pretty fortunate, after 20years at the same company, I have 5 weeks paid vacation + the week between Christmas and New years + 6 stat holidays for a grand total of 36 paid days per year. I get another week after 25 years. We even have the option of taking and extra week off without pay if we desire. We don't have defined "sick days", but if you're sick you stay home...no questions asked. Most people are happy to come to work everyday here and some even find it tough to use all the holiday time-not me. We have a "use it or loose it" policy for vacation, so the place is usually pretty quiet duing the last few weeks of the year:) Love living in Canada!

Fly, now you're just showing off. "Oh, my job's so great..." ha ha. Just giving you a hard time. We have pretty standard time off here, 2 weeks vaca, 5 days sick time and 2 personal time. BUT, we are on call 24 hours a day and have to take our cell phones with us on weekends, vaca and sick time. Kind of like NEVER getting a day off! But, I'm not bitter!!! BUT!!! I also know that if I don't like it, I can work elsewhere. :)
