I know this topic has been talked about again and again, but I just want to ask about it pertaining to my age.
When I do squats, lunges, bike riding, stairmaster, and many other excercises my knees want to give out before my muscles. They really hurt. A guy at the gym suggested using glucosamine chondroiton. I'm only 19 and it seems weird for me to be having knee problems. Should I give it a try? That stuff is spendy so I want to make sure it's right for me before I go out and buy. What brand? |

and by the way, i live in Cornfield, USA. We have a Wal Mart, a K-Mart, and that's about it. No GNC's or Vitamin World's or any of those fancy stores.

I haven't heard anything about age for that. I had an older dog that was given it to help his hips. Your one up on me tara, we only have Wal-Mart and I get everything I can there. We do have an Osco's Drug that has good sales now and then, too.-------------- ~Victoria~ ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |

Yeah we learn to really like wal mart. Okay well I'll just read the label... 19 should be old enough to take it, it's just that it seems strange that i'm having joint probs at my age. oh well. thanks

Personally I have yet to find any research conclusively showing the addition of chondroitin making the glucosamine more effective. I have found that taking glucosamine alone at 2-3 grams daily has worked far better than the glucosamine/chondrotin/MSM formula I was taking before. I get the glucosamine at Wall-Mart very cheap compared to the other formula & am a big believer in its benifits. In addition to being essential for connective tissue repair it is also a potent anti-inflamitory agent & since it is an amino acid sugar & not an analgiesic it is less irritating to your digestive system not to mention your liver & kidneys.-------------- \\"Knowledge & persistence is all one needs to succeed\"\ ---Patrick L. |

I take chondroitine and glucosamine every single day for two years now.
If you got any joint pains (like I had) then it's better to prevent than cure. The ingrediens are natural and absolutely no danger for you so don't worry about your age. -------------- - Nina :o) Les Victoires éternelles sont celles du coeur. |

I was just reading through these and was wondering if I should be taking Glucosamine and Chonroitone, cause when I'm working out my shoulders popall the time...even when I just rotate my arms in a circle. My elbows pop some times as well. I spent the past 15 years using narcotics and the past 7 using meth... :( I don't really have time right now to read through all these to find out if there are some other supplements specificaly for my situation. I've been clean now for 9 months and want to get my body into shape. My back has also taken one hell of a beating...
Thank you guys for being here for our questions. |

tarab,
one of my clients' athritis doctor told her glucosamine and chondroitin are starting to prove themselves in srudies and recommends she, and most people, take them. The most recent thing I have heard about arthritis is that the changes in your joints actually start in your 20's, so maybe you have some arthritis. But maybe your knees are off track. Do your toes point out when you walk or straight ahead? Try doing lighter squats holding a ball (soccer size) inbetween your thighs, if it makes your inner thighs and the quad just above the inside of your knee burn, you may just have weak VMOs and need to strengthen them so there is equal pull on the quadriceps tendon that keeps your kneecap tracking straight. Good luck! |

twistedwolf,
welcome back to life! Your body would probably benefit from the glucosamine and chondroitin. It probably won't eliminate the popping, though. You will also benefit from a good b-complex and a good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. Drugs use depletes your system, and it will take a long time to heal and restore it. But it is doable, hang in there. Be careful with your back, start with one exercise and only add one exercise a week - that way you will know what aggravates your back and spend less time sitting around having back pain. Take things gradually, people with addictive personalities tend to go gung-ho on everything, doing the maximum amount possible, be it drugs or exercise. Too much too soon will put you out of commission, and right now you don't need unneccesary setbacks. Eat good, fresh foods. Get some detox tea (Yogi tea company makes a good one) it will help your liver do its job. Don't be suprised if you have some very strange phases as you get healthier, your body stores toxins (drugs) that it can't deal with in fat tissues and as you work out, you may free up some of those toxins. Drink water like your life depends on it. I hope you have a good support group! You can always find support on this site, even if it isn't fitness related. Good luck, you can do it! -------------- Challenge + Consistency = Results |

What would be cause of the popping? Maybe just weak muscles? And yeah I know about my body having been depleted...haha, and that has been something I wanted to address. I was starting to go gung-ho for a bit, cause it just felt good...I had decided to back off a bit and take it easy so I didn't get hurt. I actually hurt my shoulder the other day a little, and have to miss my workout tonight...sucks. I'm gonna lower that weight for the time and do all the shoulder exercises I found on here...or most of them anyway.
And thanks for your praise...it's been awesome being clean. And now I'm backing it up with getting in shape...woohoo. haha Thank You and take care |

The popping could just be roughness on the interior of your joints, or it could be nitrogen bubbles (which is normal), when you pull a joint apart it causes a sort of vacuum within the joint, which causes nitrogen bubbles to burst (this all has something to do with why divers get the bends, too). I am not sure I am explaining it correctly, but the physical therapists/kinesiologists I have talked to say as long as it isn't painful you are alright.
Good luck! |

I'm another glucosamine chondroitin subscriber. Works for me pretty good, being post right knee arthroscopy, post right knee ACL reconstruction, and post L4-L5 microdiscectomy.
I've heard varying "success rates," for the supplement, ranging from 40 to 75% of all who try it finding relief. My ortho doc is all in favor of it. -------------- --There are no versions of the truth.-- Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic Park II |
