Another question I'd like to raise is- must carbs be consumed with the protein for the digestive system to "metabolize" it as a meal? I always try to squeeze 5-6 meals in a day with 4 of "real food" and 2 MRP's. I remember reading that when gunning for big muscle gains, you want your metabolism fired up as high as possible, even to the extent that if you wake up in the middle of the night to pee, you should eat something to intensify this effect.

www.bodybuilding.com/fun/hussman1c.htm is interesting reading for this Dr. Hussman guy at hossman.org. I'll shall save this reading for later as it's about my bedtime, and i need to hammer down one more protein shake and apple juice.

Whey protein should be taken with other macronutrients, or just not on an empty stomach, otherwise it won't make it out of the gut. The really only research-documented time that has been studied regarding protein with carbs is post workout. There have been several university studies confirming that the protein in a post workout meal is best utilized when carbs are taken in conjunction with it, in a 2:1 carb to protein ratio.

Generally speaking, when someone changes their diet drastically, and starts eating alot more food (clean, that is!), the body adapts to it by cranking up the metabolism. Then, after some time, the body once again achieves stability and levels off, as it always strives for. But then it is much better and keeps the body level by eating several small meals vs 3 big ones.
