varying my routine...is it necessary?

I have been working out 3 times a week religiously for the last 4 months now. I have been seeing results and all, but I was wondering if I needed to change my routine at all. I have heard others mention that this was the case. However, I up my weight when ever I feel that I am capable and I really push and challenge myself. Is increasing weight as good as altering my routine?

Kelly,

By upping your weight, you ARE altering your routine. However, that is not the only way to alter your routine. You can the exercises that you do, the intensity level during your workout, the order of the exercises, what time of day you workout, how long you workout, etc. The list goes on and on.

Yes, you should definitely alter your workout on a regular basis, but you may also want to think about exercising more often. 3 times a week is good for maintenance, but you should weight train 3 times a week, followed by cardio, and then get an additional 2-3 days of cardio in on top of that.

Hello, Kelly, aaronmp2003 put it very well! I found that even with cardio, my body seems to get used to things and I have to throw in something else. I do boxing and a glider for cardio and then I throw in swimming twice a week. Besides, it helps me from becoming bored and giving up, I have to have some variety.

Thanks for the advice. However, in regaurds to working out more than three times a week. I don't really think thats a good idea for someone of my size. I am only 110 pounds and I found that when I workout more than what I have been doing I lose too much weight and I begin to look gaunt and emaciated. Not at all the look I am going for. I want to be healthy and strong.

3 times a week is fine, do some cardio 2 times a week or so on non weight training days.
My phlosophy is.....K.I.S....keep it simple.......if your seeing results with your workout, then keep using it, don't fix whats not broke. When you start getting bored or tired, take a week off or so, take out 2 excercises and learn 2 new ones. I try to do somthing new once a week, even if its only like 2 or 3 sets of 10 or so, try somthing new you might like it.

Exactly Bigandrew! Keep it simple! If 3 sets of 10 reps is working, and your gaining keep using it. Only if you hit a plateau, change it up. A platue can be a number of things not just weight related, but interest, health, mood, stuff like that. Remember that the reason there is not one routine for everyone, to put on magical muscle and strip away fat, is because your body will get used to it. Though, there is one perfect routine, and i think it's name is "Change"...because your body will never know what's a comin next. Hope some of this helps. Kelly,

I can appreciate you not wanting to look gaunt, and I couldn't agree more! However, if your goal is to be strong and healthy, and you feel that you lose too much weight when you exercise more often, then I would suggest the following:

DO exercise more often, but gear your exercise sessions more towards an appropriate strength training routine, take it easy on the cardio (meaning easy, not non-existent), and make sure that you are on a supportive nutrition plan. If you tend to get too thin when you exercise, then it is likely that you need to power your workouts with plenty of quality carbs, follow up with quality protein for recovery, and supplement with l-glutamine to safeguard against muscle catabolism.

I saw an article once about a female bodybuilder who used to be anorexic, and they had her before and after pictures. Before, she looked as you described - gaunt and emaciated. After she got involved in weight training, she put on muscle mass and looked strong and healthy. I'm not saying that you should become a female bodybuilder, I'm just illustrating the power of supportive nutrition and a good workout program.

Make sure you diet's okay as well. You don't have a profile and haven't said how tall you are. Make sure you body is getting enough of the right fuel to keep you going through your work-outs etc.
