Howdy all. I am a Vegan, the strictest form of vegetarian, i.e. I don't eat anything that comes from animal products. I have been wondering if anybody else has tried doing this as a vegetarian or vegan and what kind of protein supplentation I should be doing.

Peace,
CP

Welcome to ft. There's a couple of vegetarian types on here. One of those Philia (Nina) is a moderator but lives in France so she'll probably chime in later on tonight.

Welcome to ft!

I believe soy protein is the only one you can consume. Not knowing much about vegans, but do you eat fish or seafood? If so, this would be another great protein source.

im a vegan, too, but only because im from las vegas...*snicker, snicker*

seriously, soy is the best, but make sure its only water washed, not alcohol processed. its a little more expensive, but MUCH better. otherwise, i know that by combining several veggie sources per meal, you can produce some of the essential amino acids that would normally be rec'd from an animal product, such as BCAAs, just not in the same amount.

the only thing that no veggie source can deliver but only animal products can is vitamin B12. so if you are going to train as a strict vegan, make sure you get the B12 through supplementation, otherwise you will definitely feel it.

hope that helps....

Yes, Philia is a vegetarian that occassionally eats chicken, she's said it before in another post...dunno which one, it was a while ago. I was a vegetarian for a little while, but not vegan, which I think has to be 100 times harder. Many vegetarian products that are like meat products usually have a good amount of protein in them and green leafy veggies are usually good for protein in comparison to other veggies. Nuts are good also...

A vegan cannot have egg whites, correct? I know that Philia has mentioned they are a large part of her diet. I can't imagine being a vegan! Good grief! I am sure there are some vegan sites that can help you with your training diet, have you found any? Good luck.

I do try to combine protein sources, such as wheat with rice, or soy with rice, etc. This is a good way to get more protein. But what I want to know is there any rule of thumb for how much protien a person needs while lifting?

It is taking me forever to recuperate, and I get way to sore after exercising. It doesn't make much sense to me. How much protein do you people take in a day?

Vegans can eat basically grains; rice, wheat, oats; beans, nuts, veggies, and fruits. I right now have been supplementing my diet with a multivitamin that has the B-complex.

Usually, 1-1.5g per pound of bodyweight in protein should be consumed. As far as recuperation, creatine and ZMA works the best for me. Do a search...there have been many posts on your questions.

Good luck!

Geeez, I had enough problems finding all my proteins when being vegetarian (I don't eat diary products either).
What I DO eat is protein shakes, tons of egg whites, sooooome white chicken and then of course beans, tofu and other soy products.

I have to say that the only reason why I'm vegetarian is because of the taste..... I really don't like the taste of fish nor meat (and about the diary products, well my dear tummy just doesn't like them either...).

Anyway, as the clever guys in here already said, then soy products is the answer. Eat it with some grains, brown rice, beans etc to get all the needed amino acids.
Eat plenty of nuts, almonds, sunflower seeds etc to get the needed fat and calories.
Finally, you'll need to take a vitamine pills, calcium and iron. Glutamine with be a good idea as well.

Please fill in your profile and tell us a little bit more about yourself.

Good luck.
