I was just reading threads at another forum. One of the posts was by a “senior” member of that particular site talking about all the problems with the clean and jerk as an athletic movement. He stated that the clean and jerk was basicly a ‘deadlift, reverse curl, and finished with a standing military press’. He then went on to say that since the amount of weight lifted was limited by how much one could reverse curl or military press, that the weight could not be enough to get any real benefit from. It is this kind of “advice” by the so called experts that always makes me cringe. Anyone that thinks that there is a reverse curl portion of a clean needs to withhold from giving advice. When I “rack” my clean, I am too low to the ground to do any kind of curl at all. And when my form is on (I’ve dropped the weights back to lifting no more than 85% of my max in all my Olympic lifts till I am satisfied with my form again), the weight is moving fast enough through the jerk that the weight is usually locked out before I am ever standing. What was worse, the rest of the forum agreed wit this particular member. I am very happy to know that if I was to post anything that as horrid as that (by the way, I heard the clean and jerk is also bad on the knees), someone would call me out on it. This forum is fortunate to have members like gator and mutt, that sincerely know what they are talking about, both through education as well as experience, and big andrew and menace, who are always there to debate almost anything.
Sorry to ramble, but I just had to vent. -------------- The best feeling in the world is the feeling you get after a tough set of squats after you step back from the power rack and throw up all over the floor. |

While olympic movements can be great for athletes, and I know Gator has had much success and great results using them, I have also known of other coaches who have had great success but don't use them very much because of many reasons. There are a lot of good articles on Joe DeFranco's training site that discuss olympic movements and their usefulness for athletes. Like I said, I think they are great, but I believe training for greater power output has been greatly misunderstood to a lot of people, even educated ones. I believe someone can get much greater results not by doing powerlifting or olympic training, or even I dare say a combination of the two. I do realize that you were just aggravated about what the guy said on that website, and I completely understand where you're comin from. And I believe there's a lot of professionals out there that stopped researching when they got out of college and they're out there BSin everybody. It's people like them that make it hard on anyone that knows what they're talkin about to help somebody.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. Sorry didn't mean to post that twice... and Gator I hope you took no offense to anything I said.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. aron, i know im not much older than you, but I've been on this site for a while, and it seems like i've watched you grow up. From that little kid asking how to touch rim to a well educated athlete. I just must say, I am glad that you have taken the time to make sense of your training.

Thanks wrestler....it's definitely an obsession of mine as it is yours and some others on here. Like you know, I originally started this stuff for basketball, but it's definitely somethin that I'll carry throughout my life. Training is always one thing I wanted to have the upper hand in against my opponents, and now I feel like everytime I face someone, that my preparation has been far superior thanks to you guys and a ton of researching and wow a lot of trial and error. I guess I should take this chance and say that I appreciate you guys. Especially Gator and Wrestler, there's not many athletes out there willing to help somebody without chargin them money, let alone not be a jerk about it, so I would like to think I can do the same now. So thanks all-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. make sure you only click on the post it button once. I always used to get impatient and think it wasn't working and click it again, and that led to double posts.-------------- The best feeling in the world is the feeling you get after a tough set of squats after you step back from the power rack and throw up all over the floor. |
