David Barr, a strength trainer and nutritionist recently stated this concerning once a day multi-vitamins in individuals with a higher level of fitness, and as a result, a fast BMR (Base Metabolic Rate).
"Vitamin supplements are not made for our advanced needs or accelerated metabolism. As a result of our once-daily intake, we may be left with sub-optimal nutrients levels. To optimize absorption, duration, and overall effect, take half of your vitamin in the morning, then the other half at night. This ensures that your body is getting a steady stream of nutrients."
I think it makes good sense. Since our bodies are designed to process food faster and make use of valuable nutrients sooner, it makes sense that someone with a faster metabolism would require supplementation throughout the day.
I have recently started taking 2 multi's as a result. The one is my regular high potency multi-vitamin and mineral supplement, without iron, and the other is a lower potency multi with iron, that I take in the evening. I also take a magnesium supplement (many athletes are low on magnesium) and a C&E supplement (anti-oxidants).

I thought breaking vitamins in half nullified their potency.

We need much more than a multi per day, hell, even a sedentary person for optimal health needs more than a Flintstone vitamin!
It literally amazes me that folks will spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a product that promises an ounce of muscle gain, but give absolutely no credence to our natural nutritional needs for optimal health and longevity.

That is true. Like when they started selling arginine and it was almost $50 a bottle, people would by that and then skimp on the protein shake and multi.

How can you tell if taking 2 multi vitamins is safe and not toxic? I'm starting to fear that only taking one isn't enough, but I know too much can be dangerous.

Dangerous?? In what way? Not taking enough would be much more dangerous. :)

Only real thing he might have to worry about is an overdose on iron. Synthetic iron has been known to cause problems in medium to high dosages. Thats why one of my supplements has iron, and the other doesn't, as I posted. Other than that, no real worries.
