This past week, the WABDL (World Assoc of Benchers and Deadlifters) held their World championships here in Las Vegas. This is a tested event, as well as equipment specific. My friend, Paul Vargo, who competed in the 259s and is a lifetime all-natural, set a world record with a 586.2 lbs bench, and he just missed the lockout with a 606. I have no doubt he would have hit it if he hadn’t had to drop three pound on Friday in order to make weight. He’s done 650 in the gym, so it won’t be long. But at least afterwards, we were able to hit the eating hard, including several buffets.
Another great lift was with Bill Gillespie, who is an NFL strength coach from the Seattle Seahawks. He set a record with a 706 bench. You should have seen this monster of a man jumping for joy on the platform after he got the 3 green lights! Not bad for a man in his late 40s.

These are men that I look up to. I hung up my powerlifting belt a couple of years ago to compete in bodybuilding. But it warms the heart to see posts like this...ah, the good old days.
