What exercises are good to whittle the waist? I've heard bending to the side (while standing w/ a weight in your hand) is good but will this build muscle as opposed to slimming it down?

Also, I want to build some muscle in my rear but it seems every time I do lunges or squats, I end up with sore thighs rather than glutes. Any suggestions or other exercises I might try?

Thanks all! :0)

Unfortunately, there really is no exercise to "whittle" the waist. You can do all the twists, side bending, etc. you want, but fat will not just come off the waist. You cannot spot reduce. Resistance train your entire body, lean mass burns fat. Do cardio, and then most of all to produce results, your diet has to be in order. Your workout is the catalyst for your goals, but diet determines the amount of gains or losses you get out of your workout. Good luck, hope this makes sense.

Seated twists are good, and the one you mentioned is good as well, dont' worry about it getting bulky if you are doing cardio it will give your waist a nice definition.

You really need to do some concentration on your exercises. While performing the lunges and squats focus on lifting with your glutes only, believe me when you do this you will definitely feel it. You will also feel it in the thighs are you say cause that is the secondary muscle to this exercise so they will be worked as well.

good luck!

bb1fit is right on the money. are you a dancer? im a dance teacher. all my girls want smaller waists, and what i tell them is when doing abdominals be sure to pull the bellybutton towards the spine before you begin EACH crunch. they are much harder this way. i have noticed that if they don't do this, when they are performing crunchs their tummies tend to poof up. are you overweight or do you just want a smaller waist? if there is fat on top of the muscles you need to get it off to uncover those lovely muscles underneath. your diet is key here. a dancer needs a tight center, so building muscle here is key for better balance and posture also. everyone can benefit from great abs.

i should of mentioned that the reason why i asked if you were overweight was because of your name, the dancer. many dancers ignore their fit bodies and starve themselves, because they just want to be smaller. im constantly amazed at how my girls think they're fat, but they are really in awesome shape! keep working those abs. it won't make you bigger!

I recommend doing lunges with weights, you will feel it more in your glutes than in your thighs when you use weight.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm not fat but yes, I do have a few to lose. No, I'm not a dancer but I just really love to dance so that's why I created the name. People ask me that all the time though. :0) It just seems like most of the fitness models I see in magazines don't have much of a waist... they are like straight up and down. And as I'm losing weight and toning up, I want to make sure that doesn't happen. I will continue with cardio, a clean diet, and the exercises you suggested. Thanks!

Hi,

I recomend trying Pilates - there are videos for $15 bucks
It is the best thing ever - if your gym teaches it go to a beginner session then start using the tapes...

It is amazing for the waistline

I have to update a new pic.

Hi moroccan and welcome to FT. The fitness programs offered here can definetely help you out. Just go to "exercise programs' and follow the instructions. There is even a specific program for glutes and thighs.

Good Luck!
