Is it a bad thing to change weight during your sets? Start with a heavier weight, and if need be, move to lighter weights just to keep the reps high? Or should you just do what you can with the weight being constant through your sets?

The usual method is to start lighter and go heavier. An example is for the bench press you start with 135x10 reps, set 2 is 155x10 reps, set 3 may be 160x10. Of course you can go heavy then lighter. It really depends on what you want to do. I suggest a couple of things. One is do not worry too much about the reps. Try to get to a set number but if you fail do not worry try again next time. I always go heavier and if I fail to reach a set rep range ( like 10), I usually take weight off and do a set at a lighter weight. To really gain strength and mass go heavy on the weights (using good-perfect form). Never never sacrifice form for weight. Try to get what ever reps you want, once you do it is time to add weight.
