I recently purchased a weight gainer. And i noticed its alot different from a regular protein powder. It says u have to mix it with milk. And they say take it an HOUR after a workout. So here are my two questions.
1. Do u have to always mix it with milk? What if i wanted to mix it with water?
2. Why do i have to wait an hour after my workout to take it. What would happen if i consumed it immediately right after my workout?
Thanks!

1. you are fine mixing in water if you want to...milk is just added calories, lactose (milk sugar), and casein (milk protein). it isn't bad to mix in milk, i'm not saying that, it just depends on what your individual needs are for recovery nutrition in terms of carbs and protein. Recovery nutrition is one of the most important parts of one's diet and it is surpising how few people actually do it, or think that protein is the only important thing.
2. going hand in hand with the above, there is no point to taking either carbs or protein separate after a workout. If all one takes is protein....sure you can take the building blocks in...but if there is no energy present to initiate protein synthesis (building), it can be all for naught. in short, i have no clue why they say wait an hour. you have a 2-hour window (at most 3-hour) after a workout, and the sooner you ingest the better. Your muscles are depleted of glycogen and are basically screaming out for carbs to be ingested. on top of that, protein is in bad need. you'll be in a catabolic state caused by cortisol release from the exercise until you do take in something.
so nothing else would happen if you consumed it right after a workout other than that it would get to the muscle site quicker, which is a good thing.
Also depending on your bodyweight, you'll want to make sure you are consuming a good amount of carbs, which is actually much higher than what most people do ingest. i.e. I personally take in 130g carbs post-workout during hypertrophy phase, more around 100g during strength phase. I have not gained any unwanted fat from this and i didn't just start doing these amounts for no reason, it is from research i have read and have basically concluded what works best for me. Remember that it is all about individuality when it comes to training.

I go with a whey protein w/water/dextro/malto mix immediately after my work out, drink half (44oz total) and sip on the rest for 45 minutes or so. If mixed with milk it will slow the process and you do not want that at this time (post workout). Your body will need the protein at a faster rate and milk will slow it down. The dextro/malto is an insulin spike and should only be done in your post workout shake. This is what I do, you may not want to do this, but again its up to you and your goals.

Weight gainers are a terrible idea immediately post workout, and even worse with milk. Follow Keapers advice and protocol.
Have your weight gainer for extra calories throughout the day.
