I need help. Posted this question I thought earlier, but it must have disappered. My husband and I are getting a bowflex tomorrow for a gift. I need to know will it put weight on me, or too much muscle. I just want to tone. As of now I do two mile walk a day, and work out with gilad three times a week. I want to be petite, not muscular. I am 5' 3" , 52 yo. I am doing South Beach for my weight loss. I am approx 50 pounds overweight.
Thanks
Sheila

Hey, rr... welcome to FT...

Do not fear... you will not become bulky without the help of some form of chemical work. Women are not genetically made up to become 'bulky.'

In another forum, the womens one, I believe there is an article posted about the term 'tone.' Check it out. It's actually in a couple of forums...

Also, keep in mind, as you build muscle, you might weigh more. It's just the way muscle and fat are made. Muscle is denser than fat, so one pound of muscle will be smaller than a pound of fat. So, while you might weigh a bit more, your clothes will fit totally different.

Women are really not able to "bulk up". They do not have the testosterone required for that. Women should do weight training in addition to cardio to loose fat. The more muscle you build, the more calories you burn, since muscle is more metabolicly active than fat. Most bodybuilder women take suppliments (and sadly, steroids) to get the physique they have. I lift as heavy as I can and am not bulky.

rr53, 53 was an excellent year. Many genious's. I only want to add to Tim and Michelle's posts that as you start working out you will build muscle fairly quickly. The new muscle will push the overlaying fat out and make you "seem " bigger. Don't worry. That effect is short lived. Also, do your homework on what and how much you need to eat. An effective diet for one who works out is much different from one who doesn't. I love to eat and working out steadily enables me to eat MORE than I used to when I didn't.

Copy the grocery list for healthy living stickied at the top of the nutritional board and try to eat from it. Also., if you eat 5 or 6 smaller meals a day this will help rev up your metabolism. Good luck and welcome here. There are alot of shoulders to cry on as you progress. If you need it, ask for encouragement.
