I was told by a trainer that weight training programs are very indiviualized and it depends on your body type etc as to what exercises to do.
Is there any truth to this or is he just trying to sell me?

As far as what exercises to do..I think everyone will benifit from your basic compound moves like squats, lunges, pullups, pulldowns, rows, DL's etc. Where a trainer is useful is with perfecting your form and keeping you motivated. It's not as if you're going to be able to spot reduce, so any good overall wt training routine is going to be benificial to the general public. As you say, I think he's just trying to sell you.

Yeah, he said that he wasted years worth of training the wrong way and that everyone is different and needs to do different types of exercises to see results. Maybe he meant, because i'm training for a marathon that my routine would be catered to that???

That does make some sense. While training for the marathon, your focus should be on running distance. I found that when I trained for a triathlon last year, I kind of put my wt training on the back burner for the 8 weeks leading up to it. I didn't want to risk overtaxing my muscles and/or being sore for my training. I still did wts, just much lighter and focused on compound moves. I trained for a half marathon a few years back and my only focus was increasing my distance, frequency of training and nutrition...no wt training.

Most trainers just want your money. So be weary.
While You doing a marathon would make what you do in the weight room different. But body type or gender really doesn't mean a thing.
Only things that a trainer should take into account: age and goals.
Your goal is to run a marathon....then thats what your training should center around...making that better.

You have to learn to follow, before you can lead.
