i read this one articale and it said that if you want big arms fast then put as much weight that you can so that you can just do 5-6 reps.is that true or is it better to just put enough weight on there so that you can do 8-10 reps?

Most people experience growth in the 9-12 rep range. Good heavy sets of 5-6 as you mentioned are good in the early part of the workout, follow these up with a bit less weight and a rep range as stated above. Your point here is to try to hit all muscle fiber types, which will induce more growth.

I like to vary the number of repetitions and sets.
Sometimes I do long sets with 20-30 reps and sometimes it's only 3-6 reps (right now I keep doing 5 sets of 10 reps with almost all my exercises).

What really gives you results is always trying to "surprise" the muscle into more growth.
