I own a HUGE jar of glutimine....which I understand to ONLY take after lifing weights (workout). OF course, which I need to start doing. (Also offer some ways to consume it that tastes fine but not loaded with calories as I work out around 7ish at night) BUT someone at the gym (older guy) mentioned taking creatine. How should I take it and what form or brand? Alas, is it necessary? He said it gave him energy and he lifted better. |

You can take glutamine several times a day. It’s most beneficial after a workout, but you can also take it before a workout, in the morning, before bed, etc. the great thing about glutamine is that if your body gets too much, it just passes the excess out as waste. You can mix it with anything: protein shakes, or whatever you enjoy; it has no taste and dissolves nicely. As far as creatine goes: "Women should avoid creatine. False. As creatine, a natural substance found in foods such as fish and meat, doesn’t affect anabolic hormone function, women who train with intensity could benefit from creatine use. One study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that women could gain strength and reduce body fat with creatine use. In the study, 16 collegiate women lacrosse players loaded up with 20g of creatine and followed up with 2g for maintenance for a period of 5 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the creatine users significantly improved upper-body strength, while simultaneously decreasing the percent of body fat. The study also found no incidence of liver or kidney malfunction, as measured by blood metabolites during the five weeks. Since creatine doesn’t affect or alter anabolic hormone function, creatine won’t 'turn women into men.'” *Quoted from "The Ultimate Creatine Teat," Universal Matters, Vol. 5, Issue 3, Pg. 9. I prefer creapure brand creatine. It’s the plain, old-fashioned, simple white powder, and it’s available through a few companies such as Universal and Prolab. -------------- Michael "Trample the weak; hurdle the dead!" |

My wife started using creatine, and her strength shot up. All research on creatine, male or female seems to be positive. As far as the taste of glutmine or creatine, she buys unflavored. Simply mixes them in Crystal Light, 0 calories, and you never know it is there. ONe caveat with creatine, do not mix it in advance and wait. It turns to creatinine(spelling?), which is totally a waste product your body cannot use. Creatine is very unstable in liquid. Mix it right before you are going to consume it. |

Thanks for clearing that up Michael. I've been using creatine as well with rather good results (especially a better recovery!!) I don't know about you in the States but here in France everybody thinks that creatine is just another bad illegal medication so every time I start to talk about it, they all look at me with frown eyebrows....... (But creatine is NOT illegal in France, it has not really been classified as legal as well, so it's somewhere in between..... and that's why people are confused... No wonder.....) -------------- - Nina :o) Les Victoires éternelles sont celles du coeur. |

Ok bb1, what brand does she use. Something from say...GNC? I like the idea of someting helping with getting stronger. There are some machines that I just cant get over the hump of lifting any higher. Then, again, the question goes....is there a limit of weight that women can lift for their heighth/weight factor? But something I will try with the Crystal lite. |

She loaded with a brand called Tri-Pro. Contains Creatine Citrate(5 gr.), D-Ribose(2gr.). It is a lemon flavor, 0 calories. Good luck... |

============ Quoting from workingoutgirl: That is an interesting piece on creatine. SO, women can take it. Just need to know a good brand ---after I get....employed!!!! :o) ============= I personally like Creapure Creatine. It is the most analyzed and purest creatine on the market, and was the only one that I ever saw results with. I also never had any of the gas/bloating, etc., problems that I had with other brands. -------------- Michael "Trample the weak; hurdle the dead!" |

Don't forget, a loading phase is usually necessary. Some brands say no loading necessary, but for any brands that have worked at all, the loading phase was used. You do not want to load some of the "spiked" ones though, I.E., loaded with dextrose or other high glycemic carb for the insulin spike. Load with a pure creatine mono. |

I think the issue to be concerned with is this, both Creapure and X brand may be good creatines. Read the label. You are after "micronized creatine". We all know what creatine can do.... • Increase Muscle Torque • Increase Muscle Cell Volume • Increase Muscle Energy • Increase Muscle Strength • Increase Muscle Endurance • Enhances Recovery Micronized Creatine is the top of the line, whicheve brand. You have liquid creatine, creatine candy, creatine gum, creatine capsules, and even stomach-bloating effervescent creatine. With all these "tricks" thrown at trying to market a "different" creatine - little has actually improved upon the effects of creatine monohydrate. The problem is, companies are trying too hard to make their creatine different instead of developing a creatine that is actually better. In doing so, some are even selling outright fraudulent products. Where creatine is concerned, buyer should definitely beware! As you may or may not know, creatine monohydrate will not fully dissolve in liquid. That's why you always get that gritty sand at the bottom of the glass. Look at it this way, if it falls like sand to the bottom of your glass what does it do in your stomach? Maybe that explains why so many complain of stomach discomfort when using regular creatine monohydrate. "Micronized" Creatine is the technology that sets a new standard for creatine monohydrate supplementation by actually producing creatine 'micro-particles' that are 20 times smaller than regular creatine powder. Micronized creatine has numerous advantages over regular creatine monohydrate. Faster Absorption More Efficient 20 times more total surface area for greater uptake into the bloodstream. Greater Purity Micronizing creatine produces a more pure creatine. So, if you choose Creapure or whatever brand, look for micronized creatine. And the price is very reasonable these days. Not very expensive. Good luck to you....My wife's best bench was 90 lbs. She wanted to do 100 lbs. very badly. After her creatine loading phase, about a week later, she actually did 105 for 6 reps! |
