Weight loss works on the simple philosophy of striking a healthy balance between eating good food and exercising regularly. Eating good food means simply avoiding junk or other fattening food and substituting it with better quality nutritious food like cereals, dairy, vegetables, fruits etc in your diet.

I think both cardio and weight training. Weight training helps building muscle which then helps burn fat/calories. Then cardio works the heart. Also a good diet. So u want all three: weights, cardio, and diet. For cardio jumping ropes is pretty effective.
