i know press ups are very affective and in the future i would like to be able to do more than what i do now.i'm going to follow a program from one of my m & f hers magazine for beginners.i know to do press ups you need to have a fairly strong tricep muscle to help you do it well mine are non-existent at the moment.am i able to put another chest exercise in place of the push ups.could i use a pec dec maybe would that hit the chest the same?thanx

Are we talking about pushups? If so, there was a post in the female section that talked about what you're talking about. You could do a search for it. One of the suggestions was to do push ups on the wall (standing up) and then move to "girl" push ups and then on to the real thing.

The pec deck is an ok option, but will not produce any real results. If I were you, I would continue doing the press ups as you call them, I think you mean bench presses. Just lower the weight to comfort zone, and work out with that until you build your tricep and shoulder strength. You are exactly right, triceps play a very vital role in bench strength. Set yourself up a good tricep program, and really hit them hard. You will see a big result in your bench press. Keep up the pushups too, they are always great.

In that case, the push ups are a go! Keep doing them. You will eventually get better and stronger at them. They are a great exercise. Do them close in, with your hands put together in a triangle shape, and you will strengthen your triceps!
